Naming Source[edit]

Do someone has a source about their name and the one from Super Mario Galaxy (Ted Blasters)? I check in Super Mario World game credit and I don't see their name (only Torpedo Ted). --LudwigVon Sig.png(TALK) 10:35, 28 July 2015 (EDT)

The Prima guide actually refers to them as "torpedo tubes" (granted, it also mistakenly calls them Bullet Bills instead of Torpedo Teds). LinkTheLefty (talk) 01:22, 13 December 2017 (EST)

Super Mario-Kun[edit]

Apparently, Super Mario-Kun had a skit involving the hands from these. Can anyone who can read Japanese tell me if there's anything resembling a potential official name in there? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 19:21, 24 April 2018 (EDT)

Top-left speech bubble, Yoshi refers to them as 「手っちゃん」 (Tecchan), which seems to come from 手 (te), meaning "hand", and ちゃん (chan), an affectionate honorific. Lucina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 23:21, 24 April 2018 (EDT)
Suppose we could split that from Torpedo Tube, since they're pretty clearly different things.... Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:42, 24 April 2018 (EDT)
That seems to be Yoshi's nickname for the hand as Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. has another name among Super Mario World objects (61): 「トーピード発射台」 (Tōpīdo Hasshadai) "Torpedo Launcher" LinkTheLefty (talk) 10:02, 25 April 2018 (EDT)

English name[edit]

Hmmm... I think Super Mario Encyclopedia was released a bit earlier, since some Mario Land enemies turn out that their English name is their Japanese name, but it wouldn't be the case for this. What's the English name? --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 11:31, 16 October 2018 (EDT)

The English name is Launch Pad, Yoshi. And on a related side note, there is a Bowser Minion that is calling out to Super Mario Wiki to upgrade its artwork:https://www.mariowiki.com/File:SpiketopNSMBW.png;)--Hamshamcart (talk) 17:47, 24 October 2018 (EDT)
It is "Launch Pad" in the Super Mario World section (page 69) and "Torpedo Ted Launch Pad" in the New Super Mario Bros. U section (page 217). Either way, we are currently deciding what to do about the information presented in Dark Horse's Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia. LinkTheLefty (talk) 17:52, 24 October 2018 (EDT)
Per proposal, should we move to Torpedo Hasshadai? --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 05:17, 1 November 2018 (EDT)
I've found a usable name for Torpedo Hasshadai in the New Super Mario Bros. U files: torpedo.szs/torpedo.bfres/Models/torpedobase. This also includes Search Torpedo Hasshadai, as the black texture is torpedo.szs/torpedo.bfres/Textures/torpedo_base.0 and the red texture is torpedo.szs/torpedo.bfres/Textures/torpedo_base.1. Should we rename to "Torpedo Base" and "Torpedo Base (red)" (or "Torpedo Base (Targeting Ted)")? LinkTheLefty (talk) 09:14, July 10, 2019 (EDT)
I'd support that. Niiue - Who has lost his tail? 09:31, July 10, 2019 (EDT)
I think that's too generic in my tastes. --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 09:48, July 10, 2019 (EDT)
Doesn't seem any more generic to me than "Bill Blaster". I support the move. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 11:27, July 10, 2019 (EDT)
"Base" seems to be generically used. --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 11:30, July 10, 2019 (EDT)
Not really, the other model is torpedo so it seems fairly specified to me. What exactly makes "base" less preferable than hasshadai? LinkTheLefty (talk) 13:55, July 10, 2019 (EDT)
"Base" isn't descriptive enough for me. I'd prefer to use internal filenames under a more case-by-case basis. --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 07:55, July 11, 2019 (EDT)
It's more descriptive (to English speakers) than "Hasshadai". Niiue - Who has lost his tail? 07:58, July 11, 2019 (EDT)
There's the Names in other languages template, right? --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 08:09, July 11, 2019 (EDT)
You...can't really get much more specific than what's directly called up by the in-game data, so I'm still not quite sure what you mean by generic. LinkTheLefty (talk) 08:55, July 11, 2019 (EDT)
Let me tell you in what base is invalid (IMO). It seems to describe a part of the Torpedo rather than talking about the Block. --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 11:51, December 14, 2019 (EST)
...why would the filename for the torpedo launcher describe the torpedoes rather than the launcher? TheDarkStar Sprite of the Dark Star from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey 11:56, December 14, 2019 (EST)
I still support this move, opposition is very flimsy and speculative. There's no reason the filename for the launcher's texture would refer to a part of the Torpedo Teds themselves. I also don't care for the fact that you tried ending the discussion in your favor when you seem to be the only one opposing. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 13:00, December 14, 2019 (EST)
Actually, i didn't try to end the discussion, i thought that because no one contributed during a few months, i thought it was settled. Also, you don't need to say that you don't care. --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 13:08, December 14, 2019 (EST)
Saying "I don't care for" is just another way of saying you don't like something. The discussion obviously wasn't settled because we never came to a conclusion - if anything, the page should've been moved since the majority of users discussing it agreed to do so, not doing nothing. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 13:11, December 14, 2019 (EST)
Alright then. Yeah, should probably be renamed to something. As for now, we can't use the name from the Encyclopedia until further notice, if it ever reappears, being named in-game, or something. But i definitely think it should be renamed now, but not sure how will it be set up. --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 12:02, December 15, 2019 (EST)
I think "Torpedo Base" and "Torpedo Base (red)" work fine. LinkTheLefty (talk) 07:27, December 28, 2019 (EST)
Red'd imply a coloar variant. Perhaps Targeting Ted, to make it obvious. --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 08:48, December 28, 2019 (EST)
It's a simpler identifier though, and the game itelf does essentially treat it as a color difference, though I'll settle for Targeting Ted if we must. LinkTheLefty (talk) 14:12, January 23, 2020 (EST)

(Indent restart) Torpedo Base is fine to me, I support that. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 14:17, January 23, 2020 (EST)

The articles are now "Torpedo Base" and "Torpedo Base (Targeting Ted)" - I do prefer a "red" identifier for the latter but it'd probably be best to not stall it longer. LinkTheLefty (talk) 18:08, March 8, 2020 (EDT)

Considering that we voted to partially overturn the Encyclopedia's names, should we call this Launch Pad or Torpedo Ted Launch Pad? PrincessPeachFan (talk) 08:30, July 12, 2023 (EDT)

The key word is "partially" - since this is more of an understandable English name than Comet Tico (which was admittedly an edge case to get around Lumacomète), I would say no. LinkTheLefty (talk) 17:05, July 21, 2023 (EDT)

Torpedo Tube...?[edit]

I saw a recently-added notice template on the page, and I want to say this in response. I don't think Torpedo Bases should be officially referred to as Torpedo Tubes to match with Prima Guides for Super Mario Galaxy. I feel such a name wouldn't be universally accurate to the square-shaped appearance of the Torpedo Base in other Mario games it appears in. --EleCyon (talk) 19:57, December 13, 2023 (EST)

Addendum: Okay so for clarification, I took a closer look, and yeah the Torpedo tubes in Galaxy look kinda similar with the box-like appearance but with a cannon on it instead of a hand. I still think it's a weird name though since the boxes in SMW do not have cannons. They have tubes. --EleCyon (talk) 19:59, December 13, 2023 (EST)
