The '''Headgear''' is a device that [[Fawful]] uses in the game ''[[Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga]]'' to travel in the air and to use some special attacks. It has jets coming off of the side of it , a mouth-like doodad at the top, and a large dome which is able to store things that are sucked into it. It does more then just make him airborne, it can fire plasma shots from its mouth; these shots are powerful enough to destroy [[Bowser]]'s [[Koopa Cruiser]]. He is often seen wearing this device; in fact, if he did not have it at one particular time, [[Cackletta]] would have been doomed to die for he sucked her energy up into the Headgear (after she was beaten by [[Mario]] and [[Luigi]]) to save her after a failed attempt to awaken the [[Beanstar]]. Since it was [[Birdo]]'s voice that was programmed into Cackletta's [[Peach-Bot]]s, the Beanstar heard it, went mad, and destroyed the floor below it, taking the Peach-Bots with it; after this, the [[Mario Bros.]] beat Cackletta, searched for the Beanstar (which was in the possession of [[Popple]], the shadow thief and [[bowser|Rookie]]). After the Mario Bros. defeat the two, a Peach-Bot head falls down from the above area, starts speaking again and the Beanstar goes crazy. The four hop on and Bowser (who is the last to fall off, remembering who he is and falling in [[Stardust Fields]], where Fawful and Cackletta are looking for a body for her to possess); Fawful then uses the Headgear to put her spirit into Bowser's body. The headgear was also used at the start of the game to steal Peach's (Birdo's) voice by bringing a gift to her and then spraying gas all over her face; Fawful then sucked up her voice.

It is used to get Fawful around places, though it can also be used as either an offensive or a defensive tool during battle. It is also noticed to have many functions and is Fawful's most used invention.

In ''[[Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga]]'' and ''[[Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions]]'', [[Fawful]] uses the headgear to suck up [[Princess Peach]]'s voice before the onset of the game. He uses the headgear's fireball ability to battle [[Mario]] and [[Luigi]] when they come to reclaim [[Princess Peach]]'s voice; he then uses these fireballs to destroy [[Bowser]]'s [[Koopa Cruiser]], sending the Mario Bros., Bowser and Bowser's baddies into [[Stardust Fields]]. In battle, the headgear has 18 [[Heart Point|HP]].
 
Later, when [[Cackletta]] is defeated by the Mario Bros. in [[Woohoo Hooniversity]], Fawful sucks her soul up with the headgear and deposits it inside Bowser's unconscious body in Stardust Fields after being launched out of the university by [[Prince Peasley]], thus saving her from death and creating [[Bowletta]]; a transformation between her spirit and Bowser. In ''[[Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story]]'' and ''[[Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey]]'', the Vacuum Helmet is used by Fawful to suck the power out of the [[Dark Star]] and become [[Dark Fawful]] late in the game. Afterwards, the helmet is used by Dark Fawful to search for the Dark Star, using it as a radar.
 
During the battle against Dark Fawful in the [[Conference Hall]], Bowser's [[punch]]ing and [[Flame Breath]] attacks have no effect on Dark Fawful due to his helmet, though some of his [[Brawl Attack|Special Attacks]] can damage him. One of Dark Fawful's attacks involve his helmet growing teeth and latching onto a chandelier lamp in the room to swing himself into Bowser (which is not present in the remake), which first needs to be countered with a few punches, and then [[Shell defense|ducking in his shell]] to avoid getting hit from behind. At times, the helmet will recover 300 of Dark Fawful's HP (500 in the remake) by exhaling purple gas at him. At some point in the fight, the helmet will detach from Dark Fawful and fly up to the top screen, where Bowser can [[Vacuum Block|inhale]] it so Mario and Luigi can fight it.
 
The Vacuum Helmet first inhales one of the bros.' [[Command Block]]s when battling them, [[Prohibited Command|preventing them from using it]] until the helmet is destroyed or after a few turns. It will then use one of two attacks. The first one has it fire respectively-colored energy balls at Mario and Luigi from its nozzle (red for Mario, green for Luigi), which needs to be countered with a [[hammer]].
 
In its second attack, the Vacuum Helmet encases a bro in a ball with its nozzle and moves it around to hit the other bro, which needs to be countered by [[jump]]ing on the ball to stop the attack, otherwise the attack will continue indefinitely until the encased bro loses all their HP, as it drains while inside the ball. The remake replaces this with a spinning circle attack; the Vacuum Helmet will encase one of the Bros. inside its nozzle ball, which must be dodged by jumping. If it gets too close to the bro who is dodging, the Vacuum Helmet will become faster, which makes it hard to counterattack. This move can inflict dizziness on the brother who was encased.
 
After enough damage is dealt to the Vacuum Helmet, it will explode, returning the stolen Command Blocks if they have not been retrieved, and switching back to the fight with Bowser and Dark Fawful.
 
It is possible to defeat Dark Fawful without ever inhaling the Vacuum Helmet, and when this is done, the helmet will fly away, ending the battle.

In ''Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga'', the Vacuum Helmet is shown to have many functions, and is primarily used by Fawful to fly around or hover off the ground using its rockets. The Vacuum Helmet's nozzle can both shoot fiery balls of energy at Fawful's opponents and suck up other things, like Peach's voice, Cackletta's spirit and the Beanstar, which are then stored within the Vacuum Helmet until released or the helmet is destroyed. The Vacuum Helmet's nozzle can also display sharp teeth, which is shown before it shoots fireballs.
 
In ''Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story'', the Vacuum Helmet introduces more functions, including being able to function independently from Fawful along with being able to suck up the Dark Star's power and Mario and Luigi's Command Blocks in battle. During the battle with Fawful in the Conference Hall, the helmet can be used as an evasive tool for Fawful to dodge Bowser's attacks, and can have its nozzle string extended to latch onto a chandelier in the room, which is used to swing Fawful around. The helmet can also release purple fumes at Fawful to recover his health. While inside Bowser and fighting Mario and Luigi, the Vacuum Helmet can charge up energy balls from its tube and fire it out of its nozzle at the bros, or encase one of the bros in a ball using its nozzle, rolling them along the ground while draining their health.
