The Nintendo Coin is a silver coin with the Nintendo 64 logo on it in Donkey Kong 64. It resembles the Silver Coins from Diddy Kong Racing. To obtain the Nintendo Coin, Donkey Kong must play the original Donkey Kong arcade game in Frantic Factory. After completing it once, Donkey Kong earns a Golden Banana, and Squawks appears in the room. When talked to, Squawks informs Donkey Kong that he can win a special prize by playing it again for two Banana Bunch Coins. The second playthrough is more difficult, requiring the second level to be completed with only one life (though an extra life can be earned by getting 10,000 points like in the actual arcade game); the reward is the Nintendo Coin, which replaces Pauline at the top of the stage.

After the player beats the old Donkey Kong arcade machine in Frantic Factory, Squawks the Parrot will appear and tell Donkey Kong to play the game again to win a special prize. After paying to coins the player can use the arcade machine again, this time though instead of rescuing Pauline the player will humorously have to rescue the Nintendo Coin. The games difficulty also increases, so player must be extra careful.
The Nintendo Coin and the Rareware Coin are required to retrieve the final Boss Key located behind a door in Hideout Helm.
