Initially, Sakurai announced that the game would have a single-player story mode akin to Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Subspace Emissary. Later on, he revealed that this new mode would not have any cutscenes, due to Sakurai's dislike of people prematurely showing off the cutscenes on video-sharing sites such as YouTube and Twitch.
