Drifting is a move in the Mario Kart series, allowing the kart to keep speed around corners, at a cost of a bit of handling. By pressing R this move is used. In the more recent MarioKart DS, the left and right on the D-Pad can be pushed simultainiousley while in a drift to cause the kart to get a short, but helpful speed boost when the drift is ended.
