The Zap Orb first appeared in Mario Party 6, where players could only place it on a space as a roadblock (and costs 15 coins at the Orb Shop). Opponents that passed a space contaning the orb got shocked by Zaps for 5 coins, and lost another 5 coins for every remaining space. In Mario Party 7, it was used again for the same purpose, but opponents only lost 3 coins per space instead of five.
