Clapper got his name from the popular depiction of seals clapping with their flippers, which he himself does in the games. He has silver fur, large eyes, and a tan snout with a black nose and five whiskers on each side. His hind two flippers somewhat resemble a fluked whale tail. A character resembling Clapper, named [[Seal]], later appears in ''[[Donkey Kong 64]]''.

In ''Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest'', Clapper always sits next to a body of water, making a stock seal sound effect every few seconds. Clapper has the ability to cool the water temperature if [[Diddy Kong]] and [[Dixie Kong]] jump onto him, causing Clapper to breath onto then clap his flippers, hence his name. In [[Lava Lagoon (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)|Lava Lagoon]], Clapper cools down the boiling lava water so that the Kongs to safely swim through, while in [[Clapper's Cavern (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)|Clapper's Cavern]], a level bearing his name, Clapper freezes the water into solid ice so that the Kongs can safely cross above [[Snapjaw (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)|Snapjaw]]. In both levels, the water that Clapper had cooled reverts to its original temperature after a while. Clapper is the only Animal Friend in the game to not have his own [[Animal Crate]].
