Hello. Is it possible to code this template so that the answer boxes only appear once you fill in their corresponding parameter? ("answer1", "answer2" etc.) For example, if I want the fourth box not to appear, I can simply not add anything to the "answer4" field. I'm asking because this quiz only has three answers for each question instead of the usual four, so it would be very handy to make use of the same template for this one. Otherwise I would have to create a separate template that only has three answer boxes and I don't want that... Thanks! 22:00, February 23, 2020 (EST)

:Hey, I hope you're well too! That category is limited since it's solely based off the user-entered values for the
length
parameters of the media table template. If the template isn't used or the parameter is missing for a file, that article won't be added to the category. Unfortunately I don't know of an easy way to just grab the length values directly from the files and use them for categorization, but I figured this was better than nothing for at least a place to start. Thanks for helping out! -- 14:27, May 19, 2021 (EDT)

::That makes a lot of sense. I saw that the category mentioned the
length
parameter may need to be updated, but didn't realize that the category itself was tied to it. Cool stuff! And no worries, it is definitely a huge help and a great start for reducing the file lengths. After the category is cleared, I'll probably just hit up media by game or quality requested to find the stragglers. I really appreciate the clarification. Thanks for all you do, man. 14:51, May 19, 2021 (EDT)

:Sure, I've added an error message if an anon adds any commas to an article without succeeding spaces. Let's see what happens. -- 12:25, June 1, 2021 (EDT)

Can you do this to force English quotation marks "..." around Korean words, or if that's not possible, force spaces around Asian quotation marks「...」? The anon's ignoring messages again (and tbh I'm doubting it's even a real person, the behaviour seems very bot-like). 21:54, March 24, 2022 (EDT)
:Ok, I've added something to help enforce proper quotation marks for Korean ("") and Japanese (「」) phrases. -- 02:00, March 25, 2022 (EDT)

:::::What is your ideal system? Is it normal names ("Wario Shipyard") and game identifiers where needed like "Rainbow Road (Mario Kart 7)"? -- 12:45, February 10, 2022 (EST)
::::::More or less, yeah. Though, of course, console abbreviation titles would be used as redirects. 12:53, February 10, 2022 (EST)

The only thing is, we can't use the first game names as the identifiers.

*The courses have appeared in more than one game. When a subject has appeared in more than one game, we use something else for the identifier. It's not acceptable to use a game name for something that has appeared in multiple games because it implies that if you're playing a different game, that's not the thing you're looking for.
**If you are looking for "3DS Rainbow Road" that you read while playing Mario Kart Tour, and you search that and see "3DS Rainbow Road" in the Google results, you know you're in business. "Rainbow Road (Mario Kart 7)" is misleading since you're not currently playing Mario Kart 7, you're playing Mario Kart Tour, and game names should only be used when something appears in one game.
***So it should use some other identifier. In an identifier system, "(3DS)" is an option since it directly incorporates a piece of info that the player sees in-game, which is why we used to do that. That was the compromise, but it brought a bunch of inconsistencies and a weird thing of guessing the identifier for the current game.

Going full retro solves those issues while incorporating the prefix commonly used by Nintendo in and outside of the games. And it has us using the latest iteration of each name. It's sort of like a pre-identifier, it doesn't have to be taken literally as part of the title, but it's there and it's helpful (part of why it's small).

So as you continue to think about your ideal system, you need to address that. Can't use old game names for subjects that appear in multiple games. Ideally, the system would incorporate the console abbreviation in some way as well, since that's what Nintendo themselves use as their own "identifiers." Using just the console abbreviation as an identifier makes it misleading for the Donut Plains 1 level versus the "Donut Plains 1 (SNES)" course, but putting the prefix first like how they appear in game makes them more of a unique title than at the end, so there is no parenthesis identifier needed. Having to use a console identifier versus a non-course was strange. But SNES Donut Plains 1 has appeared in multiple Kart games, so we can't do "Donut Plains 1 (Super Mario Kart)" either. Same with like DS Luigi's Mansion, we can't do "Luigi's Mansion (Mario Kart DS)" since it appears in multiple games, and "Luigi's Mansion (DS)" is a little weird since it implies it's like a DS game, but DS Luigi's Mansion just works while matching its modern usage in the latest games. Luckily, a lot of things sort of fall into place with the retro prefixes, since they all have unique article titles.

Regarding your search results thing: That's because adding the prefix makes the search more specific, so it narrows down the results when you add the prefix. But number of results is not even the metric that I'm talking about here, what matters is the number of people searching each term, and more specifically what terms are on their mind for the titles that would need identifiers (e.g. Rainbow Road). Because for a course with a unique name, they are going to find that regardless (so you could make a case to only use retro prefixes where an identifier would otherwise be needed [which is basically what we used to do except we used console abbreviation identifiers when needed], but as we learned that has its own issues, it would make things wildly inconsistent, and we don't base everything 100% militantly on search, but it is a part of the equation). But when users are inserting their own "identifiers" in the search box, they are more often inserting a console abbreviation than an old game name. Console abbreviations are what's on their mind, and that's what they're scanning for as they read the results, so those are what should be incorporated into any system. I predict that the older these original games get, the less and less they'll come up in search queries, since a lot of people will simply know them as "SNES whatever" (cementing them as the common name).

So it's only a question of moving the Tour courses as the DLC drops or after Tour support ends. I guess the default based on current policy would be to move them on release, but if we want to delay Tour course moves while both games are in service, that could be a proposal. -- 14:33, February 10, 2022 (EST)
:Regarding the "more-than-one-game" argument, there's also the Warp Spaces from Mario Party 4; despite also appearing in Mario Party: Island Tour, they still need a game identifier because there's the Warp Spaces from Mario Party 10. Also, we can switch to type identifiers for things like Luigi's Mansion or Donut Plains 1, specifically "race course" or "battle course". Tell you what, how about I draft this up extensively and then contact you once I'm done? 16:04, February 10, 2022 (EST)
::Using game identifiers for more than one game is bad and discouraged for the reasons I laid out. Yes, there are cases where it happens. If possible, a better identifier should be used. If not, then it's a one-off less-than-ideal scenario. When something is bad, pointing out that the bad thing happens in other areas of the wiki does not make that thing good, and it's certainly not an argument for implementing the bad thing on a more pronounced scale wiki-wide. And using those identifiers for Luigi's Mansion and Donut Plains 1, you lose the console abbreviation, which is a huge boon to the way folks are commonly thinking about these course titles. Ok, if you can present me with your full presentation, I may have a counter/some ideas. -- 18:00, February 10, 2022 (EST)

Recent ban due to CappyThrow Account
Hello,
I sent an email about this ban a few weeks ago and have not been responded too. I contacted Mario jc, the person who dealt the ban and also have not been responded too.
Some years ago my older sibling created an account here. He has completely left the house at this point. When I tried to create an account, I was blocked saying that I was a double account of CappyThrow. I am not him. Nobody seems to be responding and I was hoping you might. Everyone is just ignoring me.
Mario jc also blocked CappyThrow saying that he used offensive language over email - right after I sent my email. Considering everyone thinks I am him, I am concerned I may have gotten him in trouble. I assure you, my email was not intended to be offensive if this is my fault. Here is the contents of the email:
Hello,
I am sorry but I believe we have entered a misunderstanding. CappyCapture is not me but my sibling. To be quite honest, the person behind CappyCapture has moved out entirely. I completely understand where the ban came from and have no hard feelings, as I see how easy and obvious of a mistake this is to make. Especially with how rude he was - I didn't realize until I was fumbling around for a contact address and spotted his comments on Mario JC's page. However I and CappyCapture are not one. I request unbannishment? It would be much appreciated. Sincerest apologies for the mixup.
CaptainCappy
So as you can see, I don't believe I was actually offensive in this. I am very confused right now and appear to be being ignored.

Please help out,
CaptainCappy
