Following his adventures with the two Bridgemasters of [[Yold Town]], [[Mario]] found himself in the Yold Desert.  The heat made him weary, yet he pushed onwards.  The desert was covered in quicksand and the spikeless living stones, [[Bald Cleft|Bald Clefts]].  Not much occured through the desert voyage, though Mario encountered many new enemies and discovered the [[Fast Flower]] and [[Slow Flower]].

After learning from a statue of [[Fracktail]] to jump ten times while beneath a red palm tree (this wasn't his first dealings with such a tree; he had to spin around one in [[Dry Dry Outpost]] earlier in ''[[Paper Mario]]''), Mario encountered none other than [[Count Bleck]]'s burliest minion, O'Chunks.  The two did battle, but Mario emerged the victor thanks to the help of [[Thoreau]].
