The level starts in an area with some ? Blocks, one of which has a power-up, and a Goomba. After the area, there is a brick with a coin. After that, some more bricks appear. The top one contains fourteen coins and a Super Mushroom and the one under it contains one coin. Mario then encounters a Goomba next to a pipe. Mario then encounters another Goomba. Then, there is a pit. After the pit, there is a ? Block with a Mega Mushroom. After that, there are five bricks, three of which have coins in it, and a Goomba. Above the fifth brick has an Invisible Block which contains a vine which leads to an area with a brick with a 1-Up Mushroom and coins. If Mario did not climb the vine, he need to jump over a pit and a Warp Pipe. After that, there are five bricks, one of which has a power-up and another has a coin, and the first Star Coin. After that, there are some Koopa Troopas, a Goomba, many bricks, two of which contains coins and one of which contains a vine that leads to the sky with Red Coins, and three Invisible Blocks. After that is the midway point. There is a Warp Pipe which leads to an underground room with bricks, coins, three Goombas, the second Star Coin, and a power-up. If the pipe is not taken, Mario will arrive at an area with three bricks with coins in them and an Invisible Block top of the middle brick with a Star in it. After a pit, there is a ? Block containing a power-up. The third Star Coin is under three bricks; Mario has to ground pound them to get the Star Coin. There is another ? Block containing a single coin right after. There is a Goomba before the Warp Pipe Mario exits if he had gone to the underground bonus room. After the Warp Pipe, there is a Goomba, a green Koopa Troopa and four bricks, one of which has a coin. After a pit, there are three bricks, one of which contains a coin, and a red Koopa Troopa. Mario then reaches the pole after climbing Hard Blocks.

The following items appear in the following quantities:

The first ? Blocks that Mario encounters have two coins in them, and one that has a power-up. Going on into the level, Brick Blocks appear. The top one contains fourteen coins and a Super Mushroom. The one underneath that one contains one coin, while the rest are simple Brick Blocks. Mario then encounters a Goomba, found next to a Pipe. The Pipe cannot be entered, however. Mario encounters another Goomba shortly after. Then, Mario jumps over a pit while collecting coins. A block is found about one-third through the level, and a Mega Mushroom is encountered for the first time, making Mario become Mega Mario, destroying everything in its path. However, if the player chooses not to get the Mega Mushroom, they should keep advancing. The player now sees their first Star Coin. There are some Koopa Troopas and a Goomba in this area. There is also a hidden vine that leads to the sky with Red Coins. It is located inside a Brick Block where the Red Koopa Troopa is walking. The pipe that's currently visible to the player leads to an underground room with the second Star Coin in it, and a power-up. The player sees three Brick Blocks with coins in them, but if the player jumps on top of the middle Brick Block, a Star comes out of it. Another ? Block are here, this time containing a power-up. A set of Brick Blocks is blocking the third Star Coin; the player has to ground pound it to break it and get the Star Coin. Another ? Block is here, containing a single coin. A couple of Goombas and Koopa Troopas appear in this area, along with Brick Blocks and Coins. The player encounters the flagpole, and can finish the level. They gain access to World 1-2. There are a few vines leading to platforms and other things and a Super Star is found above a Brick Block before the end of the level.
