The Washing Machine is found in the parallel version of Vortex Island where it is revealed to be the source of the vortex in the normal world. Once the Washing Machine has been picked up, it is wrung out, refills Mario's paint, and become a colorless card. After Mario squeezes it, the Laundry Guy (a normal Shy Guy in the European and Australian versions of the game) scolds him, stating that the Washing Machine was in the middle of the spin cycle and starts a battle with Mario. After beating the Laundry Guy, a Shy Guy 5-Stack, Koopa Troopa, and Shady Sledge Bro individually fight Mario for ruining their pieces of clothing. Returning to the normal world reveals that the vortex has subsided. Once it has been used as a card, it returns to its original position in a powered-off state. It can also be purchased from the Wringer for 300 coins and sold as an unpainted card for 1 coin. A replica version of the Washing Machine can be collected from the Battle Spin. Β

When it is used in battle, Mario walks away before the screen gets rolled up and placed into the Washing Machine. It shakes and emits bubbles while it is on. Once it finishes, the screen gets released and uncrumples to fit back in position. The player can continuously press wiiu as the Washing Machine shakes to increase the damage dealt.
