The objective of this event is to score points by performing certain moves on the opponent.
In the game's story mode, Judo appears as the first challenge of Sonic Episode 1, Sonic Arrives, in which Sonic must beat a Fog Imposter of Mario. It also appears as part of the fifth challenge of Heroes Episode 1, Mario and Sonic, in which Mario must beat a Fog Imposter of Sonic in it, as well as in Fencing - Epée and 100m. It also appears as the third challenge of the Final Episode,  The Grand Showdown, in which Mario must beat Bowser in it after he has been powered up by the Phantasmal Fog.

In this event, the player must score a full point to win, either from a single full point-scoring move or from two half point moves to earn a combined point. They must play a semi-final match, and depending on the result of that, either go through to a third place match against the other losing character or a final one against the other winner, however only one match is played in the story mode as the player only has one opponent. At the start of the event, the characters will bow to each other before taking a fighting stance and approaching and attempting to tackle each other. If the attempt is successful, the player will be prompted with a command to input of a direction on the 3ds and 3ds, 3ds, 3ds, or 3ds in the first round, as well as 3ds or 3ds if the player makes it through to the final. If they manage to input the commands very quickly, they will be able to perform a perfect throw which will award them one full point. If they input a command with poorer timing, but still better than the opponent's, they will still be able to perform a move but will only be awarded a half point. If the player fails to input any command or an incorrect one, they will fail but may have a chance to retry it if the opponent is yet to correctly input theirs or not long afterwards. If they input at almost the same time as their opponent, the tackle will fail and they will be given another command to input. After several times of this occurring, the player will then have to quickly repeatedly press 3ds, 3ds, 3ds, or 3ds prompted onscreen to attempt to overpower the opponent. Doing so will allow them to perform a move, however if they remain roughly in the middle of the onscreen meter, they will start the point over. In this event, the moves that can be performed are circle throws, hip sweeps, shoulder throws and leg reaps. Toad acts as a referee in this event.
