The Elite Captain Quartet is first formed in ''[[Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions]]'', when [[Captain Koopa Troopa]] becomes the fourth Captain in [[Teehee Valley]] to help the Goomba Squad in their mission to save [[Bowser]]. At the end, when Bowser is about to reinstate [[Captain Goomba (Mario & Luigi series)|Captain Goomba]] as captain of the Minions, he suddenly remembers that the Goomba was responsible for his amnesia, promptly chasing him to take away his title and flag instead.

===''Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey''===
In ''[[Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey]]'', the former captains have regained their flags through unknown means. They are fought twice in [[Bowser's Castle|Bowser's Castle (east)]], with each one being battled individually throughout separate stages. [[Morton Koopa Jr.]] informs Bowser Jr. of how they were responsible for saving Bowser in the [[Beanbean Kingdom]], but the prince does not initially believe it. The full group then fights in unison during [[The Power of Junior]], alongside [[King Bob-omb]]. They reappear together during [[The Trio Clash!]] in [[Bowser's Castle|Bowser's Castle (west)]], where they rescue [[Wendy O. Koopa]] from the [[Best Fitness Friends]]. During the level, they act as Bowser Jr.'s troops. [[Ludwig von Koopa]] reassures Junior of the quartet's capabilities, citing the incident in the Beanbean Kingdom, which leads to him joining them in the fight against the BFF.
