Cackletta and Fawful overtake the university and turn all of its scientists into Laser Snifits. In fact, Mario and Luigi see a professor transform right before their eyes. The Mario Bros. have to complete many tasks and defeat many of these monsters on their journey through the building. By repositioning a multitude of mirrors, they manage to shine light on and open the Sun Door, which leads to the room where the villains plan to awaken the Beanstar. However, when Cackletta activates the Peach Bots that supposedly house Princess Peach's stolen voice (the only sound to which the Beanstar will respond), they make a strange noise that angers the Beanstar, causing it to destroy the ground beneath it, sending it and the Peach Bots falling down into the university's basement.
Mario and Luigi fight and defeat Cackletta, whose essence is sucked up by Fawful (into his Headgear) for safe-keeping. Prince Peasley then appears and throws Fawful out of the university before telling the brothers to go to the basement and retrieve the Beanstar. However, Popple and Rookie (actually an amnesiac Bowser) find the artifact first and must be defeated in order for the Mario Bros. to claim the Beanstar. Unfortunately, a Peach Bot then crashes down and emits the strange sound again, causing the Beanstar to fly up into the air and out of Woohoo Hooniversity in rage, with Mario, Luigi, Popple, and Rookie in tow. Later, Popple, Mario, Luigi, and Rookie lose their grip on the Beanstar, which separates into four pieces and is scattered across the Beanbean Kingdom.
