Tox Boxes roam and stomp behind Mario

Tox Boxes are huge metal boxes that move along a set path in Shifting Sand Land, the 8th world in Super Mario 64. The path is a small maze of tiles surrounded by darker, faster moving quick sand that sucks Mario in instantly.

Besides a singular hole on one side, the other sides of a Tox Box each have a face spray painted on. The hole is for Mario to stand inside as the Tox Box passes over the tile he's standing on. The tile maze has a few Red Coins on it, as well as the course's only cannon.

In Super Mario 64 DS, if Wario is inside one of them and punches, the Tox Box will fly somewhere into the sand, and sink. Tox Boxes also appear in the Super Mario 64 DS mini-game Tox Box Shuffle.

Cosmic Tox Boxes are angry Thwomp-looking Tox Box-like creatures in Super Mario Galaxy. They were first shown in the GDC 2007 video. These strange boxes were shown along an oversized Thwomp in the trailer on a bright place where there was only a thin area to walk. Because of this, it seems that the only way to get past these is to go into their lower space (also like a Tox Box) when they go thumping past. They seem to appear in the Beach Bowl Galaxy.
