Polterpups are small, ghostly dogs that appear in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. They are one of the many ghosts live in Evershade Valley, and are typically friendly, but when the Dark Moon shattered they became very mischevious. There is one main Polterpup that appears throughout story mode, but other Polterpups only appear in the ScareScraper.
Polterpups are ghost dogs in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. During several missions in the game, Luigi encounters a sole Polterpup, named ???, that takes various objects of importance that he needs. These objects range from Keys to other necessary objects like clock hands. A Polterpup, the only one encountered in the story, may also revive Luigi when he's lost all of his HP if he happens to have a Gold Bone with him. When a Polterpup has taken something, Luigi must track it down using the Dark-Light function. When the Polterpup is found, he must suck it up. Upon being sucked up, its color changes to gold. This single Polterpup, named ??? and sporting a red collar instead of the usual blue, consistently escapes from the Poltergust 5000. It is eventually caught and put in the Vault after the first mission in the Treacherous Mansion.

Appearance
Polterpups also appear in their own ScareScraper mode: Polterpup Mode. In this mode, the group must find the kennels or locations where the Polterpups are hiding and capture them all. Each Polterpup has 50 HP, except for Big Polterpups, which have 100 HP. Big Polterpups are found only in Polterpup Mode.
Polterpups look similar to Poochy, but wear blue collars and are completely white and, like most other ghosts in the series, are slightly transparent. Their eyes are white too, but aren't transparent and therefore stick out more.

Game Appearances
In the game's ending, it is shown that Luigi keeps the Polterpup met in the story as a pet. It falls asleep in Luigi's lap at the end of the game.
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Polterpups appear in the ScareScraper mode of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, and actually have their own mode: Polterpup Mode. In Polterpup Mode, the Luigis must hunt down as many Polterpups as possible by using their Darklight Devices to see the footprints. Once a Polterpup has been located, he must be flashed with the Strobulb and vacuumed up. Each Polterpup has 50 HP, but rarely you can find a Big Polterpup, which has 100 HP.

*According to a swapnote sent by Shigeru Miyamoto, Polterpup is his favorite ghost.

*Polterpups leave invisible imprints when they jump through walls, floors, or ceilings, similarly to Slimer from Ghostbusters.
*Despite being a ghost itself, other ghosts seem to have a dislike of Polterpups, which is shown at the Old Clockworks where one of them steals a clockhand from some Greenies.
*Despite being a ghost itself, other ghosts seem to dislike Polterpups, as proven when a bunch of Greenies chase after it when it steals their clock hand in the Old Clockworks.
*A Swapnote message regarding Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon was sent by Shigeru Miyamoto prior to the game's release. According to the note, the Polterpup is Miyamoto's favorite ghost in the game.
*Other than being mischievous, Polterpups do not seem to be necessarily "evil" after the Dark Moon shatters, since they still appear to be mischievous after it is repaired.
*The Polterpup, ???, is the only ghost in the Vault without a name.
*Polterpups seem to enjoy Gold Bones, since when Luigi dies in Story Mode, if he has a Gold Bone, a Polterpup will come and eat it before licking him to wake him up.
*Despite only one Polterpup appearing in Story Mode, after capturing it, it still restores Luigi's HP when he is out.
*Whereas normal Polterpups have blue collars, the main Polterpup character has a red collar.
*Aside from their mischievous behavior, for some reason, Polterpups are unaffected by the shattering of the Dark Moon.
