Split Mushroom Genie and Genie of the Lamp into separate articles[edit]

split 4-2
These characters have a similar role and are summoned by similar means, but they look and act very differently; the Mushroom Genie is more lean and gentle to its master, whereas the Genie of the Lamp is far larger and rougher, not to mention they appear to have a different mushroom cap as well as a slightly different outfit. If this proposal passes, I might make a similar proposal for Magic Lamp and Genie Lamp.

Support[edit]

  1. LinkTheLefty (talk) Per proposal.
  2. SuperYoshiBros (talk) It's pretty obvious they're different characters. They have different names (even in Japan, which is pretty much solid proof based on past merges/splits) and look pretty different too. Also, even if they do the exact same thing, the way they execute it is different too.
  3. Time Turner (talk) The differing names, looks, personalities, and actions suggest to me that these are different characters. Per all.
  4. Warioad (talk) Per all.

Oppose[edit]

  1. River Piranha (talk) Hardly worth worrying about for such a minor character, and the two articles created from the split would both be extremely short.
  2. Mario (talk) The Japanese names aren't extremely drastic (Mushroom Genie, Genie of the Lamp), and I view the Mario Party 4 incarnation of the genie to be more of a drastic redesign rather than a separate character. So, I'm leaning toward keeping them merged.

Comments[edit]

@River Piranha: The importance of the character(s) and the length of the resulting articles are irrelevant here; what matters is whether or not they deserve to be split. Hello, I'm Time Turner.

I always thought the Genie in Mario Party 4 is supposed to be a joke (a normally muscular Genie lets himself go) to the older Mario Party games. Not to mention, both their outfits and their mustache are the same. It can be just a drastic redesign. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! Please notice, the Genie of the Lamp has feet, but the Mushroom Genie does not. Warioad (talk) 19:53, 10 December 2014 (EST)

Re-merge Mushroom Genie and Genie of the Lamp[edit]

Do not re-merge Mushroom Genie and Genie of the Lamp 3-7
They serve the exact same function of taking the player to the Star, they're summoned by the same item (the Genie Lamp, which was confirmed to be the same as MP4's Magic Lamp in MP:TT100), and despite some differences (mostly the different caps and one having legs while the other doesn't), they still share a lot of specific visual traits like the brown mustache, white vest, "under half" of the same color and golden bracelets.

Support[edit]

  1. DesaMatt (talk) Per proposal.
  2. Ahemtoday (talk) This situation most reminds me of Chancellor and Toad Minister, in that it's a bit player in a game and a similar bit player in the same role from that game's intended sequel. We merged those, and the biggest point why is that, regardless of whether or not they're actually supposed to be the same character, they're the exact same concept. So I'm supporting a merge both for that reason and for consistency with Toad Minister.
  3. Pseudo (talk) Per all.

#SolemnStormcloud (talk) Per Ahemtoday.
#Somethingone (talk) Per Ahemtoday, and many other precedents of such.

Oppose[edit]

  1. Hewer (talk) Per the proposal above that originally split these. Although they are indeed similar to each other, that doesn't make them the same character. Their shared physical traits are just typical genie garb, and them both being summoned from the lamp isn't great evidence since that same lamp summons neither of them in The Top 100, so it's not like it can only ever summon one thing.
  2. MegaBowser64 (talk) "Please notice, the Genie of the Lamp has feet, but the Mushroom Genie does not." As well as this profound piece of information as proof to my case, the Genie of the Lamp residing within the Mario Party 4 video game is much more obese than his Mario Party 2 (and Mario Party 3) counterpart, the Mushroom Genie, with a star depicted on his protruding navel, and also has differing arm accessories, as follows: Instead of donning the single, wide, golden bracelet possessed by said Mushroom Genie and worn on his right wrist, the Genie of the Lamp exhibits a pair of red armbands, as well as two bright orange bracelets, below either shoulder and on each wrist, respectively. Regarding the arms themselves, the Genie of the Lamp is notably less muscular than the Mushroom Genie, which could be attributed to his obesity and apparent sluggishness. Perhaps the most noticeable distinction, however, is the large lamp perched on the Genie of the Lamp's head, presumably a Magic Lamp. The last difference to note is the fact the Genie of the Lamp is much larger than the Mushroom Genie, possibly as a result of, or to complement, his obesity. With these statements in mind, it seems highly unlikely said genies could possibly be one and the same. that was kinda fun.
  3. Tails777 (talk) Per Hewer.
  4. Somethingone (talk) Changing my vote, per Hewer. Shouldn't let consistency cloud my vision when there's no proof (naming or bios or otherwise) they are the same.
  5. Wikiboy10 (talk) The Japanese names are very different.
  6. SolemnStormcloud (talk) Per all. At least the Chancellor and Toad Minister look similar.
  7. FanOfYoshi (talk) Per all.

Comments[edit]

I can see either option happening, but I want to point out in the greater context of the series, as I said in the earlier proposal, I think the Mario Party 4 Genie is intended as a continuity joke, a redesign of the same character. The Genie in Mario Party 2 and 3 is muscular and he's quite recognizable. Mario Party 4 returns the same item and function, but the character you're seeing is obese instead. That being said, the one in Mario Party 4 does have a different name and a different head all together, so the differences are drastic enough for a reasonable split as well. The assumed joke could just as easily be that instead of the muscular genie guy from the previous games you were expecting, you instead see a new obese genie take his place. It's impossible to know for sure what the intent behind it was, so I don't think it can really be used as evidence either way. Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 18:32, June 15, 2023 (EDT)
Yeah, hence why I didn't vote, just wanted to contextualize. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 22:06, June 15, 2023 (EDT)

@Ahemtoday and Somethingone: Almost all of those examples share names in at least one language, which the genies don't. And there's also precedent for going in the opposite direction, such as Princess. I really don't like the idea of merging characters we don't know are the same just because they're similar enough that we think they might be (the wiki is against speculation after all). Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 17:29, June 15, 2023 (EDT)

@Ahemtoday, just because another pair of articles got merged doesn't mean we're forced into speculating these are the same characters. BOWSER... (talk) 12:09, June 20, 2023 (EDT)
