They are violet with light-blue fins and have a round, flattened body, making them similar to {{wp|coral reef fish}}. They also bear a frowning mouth.

Gordos swim passively and slowly, either from side to side or in circles. Bumping into one causes it to make a twirling movement and damage the [[Kong]]s. They are tougher than [[Finley]]s, requiring three [[Corkscrew (Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze)|Corkscrew]] attacks or three cane swipes from [[Cranky Kong]] to defeat them.

Gordos mostly inhabit marine environments, such as those of [[Lost Mangroves]] and [[Sea Breeze Cove]]. However, a small number of them appear floating in mid-air in the [[Rocket Rails]] stage, where they once again act as obstacles for the Kongs, who ride in a [[Mine Cart]]. While in the Mine Cart, the Kongs can defeat a Gordo with a single stomp or by simply crashing into it, though the latter will also damage them.
