[[Mario]] first meets Chef Shimi after boarding the Excess Express, where he assumes the role of a detective to deduce who stole Shimi's [[Galley Pot|pot of stew]]. Following a trail of spilled stew, Mario discovers the identity of the culprit. The pot of stew was stolen by [[Heff T.]], an overweight, gluttonous [[Toad (species)|Toad]]. Mario returns the pot to Shimi, who rewards him with a [[Star Piece (Paper Mario series)|Star Piece]].


During the events of ''[[Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door]]'', Mario assumes the role of a detective while on the train to discover who stole Chef Shimi's [[Galley Pot|pot of stew]]. Following a trail of spilled stew, Mario discovers the identity of the culprit. The pot of stew was stolen by none other than [[Heff T.]], the obese [[Toad (species)|Toad]]. Mario returns the pot and Chef Shimi rewards the "detective" with a [[Star Piece (Paper Mario)|Star Piece]].
After leaving [[Riverside Station]], Chef Shimi states he is preparing evening meals using mushrooms picked from Riverside Station, although Mario's partner questions if these mushrooms are safe to eat.


Chief Shimi also has a trouble in the [[Trouble Center]]. For a special meal, he needs a [[Mystic Egg]], a [[Golden Leaf]] and a [[Keel Mango]]. Mario had to get the Mystic Egg by playing with [[Petuni]], collect the Golden Leaf behind the [[Creepy Steeple]], and get the Keel Mango from a tree in [[Keelhaul Key]], and then bring the ingredients back to Shimi for his reward.
On the third day, Chef Shimi, along with the passengers, is absorbed into a hoard of [[Smorg]]s that attack the train. Mario defeats the Smorgs, causing them to blow away in the wind, thus releasing Shimi and the others.
