Red Shy Guys walk off ledges while pink ones don't, striking a resemblance to Green and Red [[Koopa Troopa]]s respectively, although the primary difference is that Red Shy Guys are known to turn in the direction of the player after landing. Red ones are also known to ride [[Autobomb]]s and [[Ostro]]s and often appear out of [[Vase]]s. Pink ones became blue in the remakes of ''Super Mario Bros. 2''. The ''Super Mario Advance'' remake introduces [[Mega Guy]]s. It takes time to pick them up because of their size. If the player picks up a Mega Guy and throws it, hitting the ground or hitting another enemy with it, it will drop a heart.

Shy Guys appear in ''[[Paper Mario: Sticker Star]]'' with their ''Super Paper Mario'' appearance, although their feet are more within their robes. They only appear in World 3 and World 4. In battle, a Shy Guy's only attack is running up to Mario and flailing its arms at him. Sometimes, the Shy Guy might trip before reaching Mario, cancelling the attacks. Also, if Mario uses a Tail [[Sticker]], the Shy Guy will push Mario and try to steal the sticker. A Shy Guy can also knock away one of Mario's attacks if he uses the [[Battle Spinner]] that causes the Shy Guy to take up its turn. Along with standard Shy Guys, a new sub-species known as [[Mariachi Guy]]s appear. There are also Shy Guys holding paper clips, known as [[Clip Guy|Clip Guys]], and [[Paint Guy]]s, who hold a bucket of paint. Both of these enemies can assist a Shy Guy in battle. Additionally, [[Spear Guy]]s and [[Snifit]]s also appear in the game. Additionally, two Shy Guys are found harrassing the [[Travelling Toad]] in World 4-6. They are very powerful, similar to [[Anti Guy]]s, each having 120 HP and an attack power of 7. When defeated, they drop a [[Secret Door]] sticker. Unlike Snifits, Shy Guys will take damage from staying in poison too long in battle and will try to find unpoisoned ground, but the poison layout is good because if there are a group, they lose more HP than Mario though Mario will get harmed by poison as well.

Since ''Super Mario Bros. 2'', Shy Guys have been seen working for many other villains, including [[Smithy]], [[Donkey Kong]] and [[Kamek]]. One Shy Guy (the White Shy Guy) is actually an ally of Yoshi. It can be assumed that Shy Guys never have had a true allegiance.
