They are likely based on the {{wp|wandering albatross}}, which is also called a "goonie" or "gooney bird". Some Goonies carry [[Shy Guy]]s or [[bomb]]s, similar to how [[Albatoss]]es carry [[Bob-omb]]s in ''[[Super Mario Bros. 2]]''.

A Goonie appeared in ''[[Tetris Attack]]''. It was allied with [[Lakitu]].
