Icicle Mountain
The Japanese version of the Topis on Icicle Mountain.

Topis are small, round creatures with white fur coats. They normally inhabit arctic climates. Topis are common enemies of the Ice Climbers (first debuting in the Ice Climbers' eponymous debut game Ice Climbers), but they also appear as a trophy and in the stage Icicle Mountain in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

In the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. Melee, Topis are small seals rather than the yeti-like creature seen in Western versions. The reason for this strange change is actually based on the enemy's original appearance in Ice Climbers; although Topis originated in the Japanese version of their first appearance as the small seals Japanese gamers are familiar with, issues regarding animal cruelty eventually changed them to more "fictional" creatures for English versions of both Ice Climber and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Topis debuted in the game Ice Climber, shuttling ice with which to repair cracks in the floors. They were kept really busy as Nana and Popo constantly cracked the floors with single strikes of their ice hammers. Despite the monotony of their chilly work, these creatures never slacked off for an instant.
