The story begins with a cut scene with Mario and Bowser in a battle on Bowser’s airship. Princess Peach is there too with a tiara named Tiara. Bowser then breathes a fireball at Mario who dodges it, allowing it to continue out of sight. Bowser then indicates it is Mario’s end and then he throws his tuxedo top hat knocking off Mario’s cap off his head, but still missing Mario. However, it comes back to hit Mario from behind launching away as Peach calls for him. Mario’s cap then floats back down before Bowser stomps on it, stating it is time for Peach’s marriage to him and asking Mario if he’s jealous. Mario’s cap then drifts away as the airship starts to move away, it is then torn apart by the propellers and the pieces move in different directions. One piece with the M on it is caught by Tiara’s big brother Cappy who glares at the airship before going in retreat of Mario.
After the crash landing succeeding Mario's fight with Bowser, Cappy finds Mario and attempts to wake him up. When Mario jumps up, he runs in fear. After going past two Bonneters, Cappy stops fleeing and talks to Mario, explaining that he has landed in the Cap Kingdom. He says that his kingdom was also attacked by the same monster that attacked Mario, and that his little sister, Tiara, was kidnapped by him. Sharing a common goal, Cappy joins Mario, allowing him to perform all hat-related moves.

Cappy arrives to Mario and attempts to wake him up. When successful, he flies away in fear. After going passed two Bonneters who question Mario, Cappy comes face-to-face with him, apologizes for running away and tells him that he was startled. He then explains that Mario that he has landed in the Cap Kingdom what has happened. He says his kingdom by the same monster (not knowing Bowser’s name) was also attacked and his little sister Tiara was kidnapped. He then wishes to give Bowser in a ship of his own. Unfortunately, all of the airships were wrecked in the attack. On the other hand, Cappy then thinks and is pretty sure there is one in the next kingdom over. But in order to get over there, they would need to get to the Top-Hat Tower which is guarded. Cappy then suggests he and Mario should team up; Mario then realises he hasn’t got his cap. Cappy giggles and then lays himself of Mario’s head. Mario isn’t fond of Cappy’s style, so Cappy merges with the piece of Mario’s cap and officially becomes Mario’s companion as Mario throws him and he spins around and comes back.

In the main section of Bonneton, there are several wooden posts that can be pulled out using Cappy, many of which reveal several coins. Past the airships is a switch which Cappy can flip, and a bridge will then rise from the clouds granting access to the tower. Three Mini Goombas are in front of the entrance. Inside the tower, there is a pond and some frogs, which serve as the tutorial for the capture mechanic. There are several tall ledges with ponds that can only be scaled by capturing a frog, ones of which has several Mini-Goombas. Additionally, there are several points at which Mario can reach several coin rings using a frog. At the top there is another door, along with a hidden Life-Up Heart. The door leads outside where there are more wrecked airships, and a hill leading to the top. Upon scaling the hill, Mario is introduced to the Broodals, and must fight Topper. After two hits, Topper is defeated and a spark pylon leading to the Cascade Kingdom appears. The mission ends after capturing the spark pylon.

Mario and Cappy then begin to make their way through Bonneton to the Top-Hat Tower and they will eventually arrive at a switch which Cappy can flip. A bridge will then rise from the clouds granting access to the tower. Four Micro Goombas will then charge at the pair as Cappy calls then ‘odd little fellows’ and that they know Mario and don’t seem to like him. Inside the tower, there is a pond and frogs which Cappy can capture so Mario can scale the tall ledges with extreme jumping heights. Another door then leads outside where there is more wreckage as well as scared Bonneters. Then Mario may go up a steep hill to the very top where there is a white platform. When Mario jumps on it, four rabbits on a small airship will appear, the one at the front in a green tuxedo known as Topper then tells Mario and Cappy that da boss (Bowser) told them here would be a fella widda mustache (Mario) coming along. He then introduces the group as the wedding planners and they call them the Broodals. Topper then states they have da treasure (Tiara) they need and ruffin' up goody-two-shoes meddlers was on the contract some he has work to do. So he jumps down from the airship and summons three hats and then the fight starts. After two hits, Topper is defeated and a spark pylon leading all the way to the Cascade Kingdom appears. Cappy can capture it and then as he and Mario move on, the title appears, thus indicating the journey has begun.

Topper, Super Mario Odyssey

Cappy of the Cap Kingdom is the prologue of Super Mario Odyssey and takes place in the Mushroom and Cap Kingdoms. The mission's objectives are to form an alliance with Cappy, defeat Topper and find a way to get to the Cascade Kingdom.

Layout[edit]

After the crash landing succeeding Mario's fight with Bowser, Cappy finds Mario and attempts to wake him up. When Mario jumps up, he runs in fear. After going past two Bonneters, Cappy stops fleeing and talks to Mario, explaining that he has landed in the Cap Kingdom. He says that his kingdom was also attacked by the same monster that attacked Mario, and that his little sister, Tiara, was kidnapped by him. Sharing a common goal, Cappy joins Mario, allowing him to perform all hat-related moves.

Mario meets Cappy.
