SMRPG REMAKE NOTES: In the remake, after opening the chest, Mario gets the Signal Ring from the elderly Toad. In the remake, the player can get the chest at any time by jumping on a Toad's head and jumping up to it. In the remake, the Hidden Treasure no longer here and is instead found in the southern corner of the last passageway, after navigating through the maze.

Treasures are treasure boxes in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars containing coins, items, gear or occasional enemy. There are 166 in total, with 39 of them being hidden.
Mario's Pad, Midas River, Tadpole Pond (and it's sub-section, Melody Bay), non-mine parts of Moleville, Booster Hill, Star Hill, Seaside Town, Vista Hill and the Factory are the only locations that do not have any treasures at all.
Hidden Treasures
Hidden Treasures (originally hidden treasures, and alternatively hidden chests or Surprise Boxes) are variation of the more common Treasures. Mario learns about Hidden Treasures from an old Toad living in the basement of the Mushroom Kingdom Item Shop. By jumping, Mario can discover the location of the invisible treasures. A friendly Chester in Monstro Town provides Mario the number of Hidden Treasures left to be found. Later in the game, Mario can collect and equip an Accessory from Croco, the Signal Ring, which makes a noise whenever he is in an area with a Hidden Treasure. There is no reward for opening every Hidden Treasure, and the Chester from Monstro Town will say, "Wow, you found them all." for doing so. The concept of hidden containers are carried over with Hidden Blocks in the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games.
