At the start of the ruins, Mario will encounter Mini Goombas (later replaced with ordinary Goombas wearing sombreros). After going up the stairs and to the right, a Bill Blaster will start shooting Bullet Bills at Mario. Mario can capture the Bullet Bill and use it to travel through some coin rings, or he can simply ride the moving platform. Either way, he will reach an area with cracked stone blocks and another Bill Blaster. The blocks are destroyed when hit by Bullet Bills. Destroying the glowing one reveals a Power Moon. On the next floor, Mario will find a Checkpoint Flag. After defeating Knucklotec, Goombette will appear in this area. There is a staircase leading down to a hole in the quicksand that takes Mario to the Ice Cave. To the left of the hole is a secret room underneath the wall with a Power Moon inside.

To the left of the Checkpoint Flag is a trio of Sand Geysers leading across the quicksand. Near the Sand Geysers is a caged Power Moon which can be obtained by ramming a Bullet Bill into the cage. Crossing the Sand Geysers takes Mario to an area with some cactuses and an 8-bit pipe. In the following 2D area, Mario must dodge some Bullet Bills. After exiting the 2D area, Mario will find another Bill Blaster and some crates. One of the crates contains a Power Moon, while another contains binoculars. Mario can capture a Bullet Bill and use it to get on top of the front gate, where a Power Moon can be found. Three moving platforms are floating above a sand slide, which has a Power Moon on it. At the bottom of the sand slide is an alcove where Mario can find another Power Moon.

The three moving platforms lead to the base of a tower with another pipe leading to a 2D area with Bullet Bills. Two Power Moons can be found here, one by collecting s, and another by discovering a hidden area near the top. At the top of the tower is a Checkpoint Flag and the first story moon. Collecting it spawns platforms leading to the Moe-Eye Habitat and begins the second story mission. Later, Glydon appears at the top of the tower, and spark pylons are set up connecting the tower with Tostarena Town and the Inverted Pyramid.
