A Preying Mantas is actually a jellyfish found in the waters in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. They move up and down in a small area, so they're not much of a threat. Yoshis can only attack them when in submarine mode, so spend the torpedoes on the Piscatory Pete fish.

It is possible that the Preying Mantas are related to the salt-water dwelling Jellyfish from Yoshi's Story.

What could be a Preying Mantas appears in Super Mario Galaxy.
