Polterpups are medium-sized ghost dogs that first appear in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.

History
Luigi's Mansion series
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
They are one of the many ghosts living in Evershade Valley, and are normally friendly, but when the Dark Moon shattered, they started causing mischief. There is one main Polterpup character that appears throughout Story Mode. Polterpups as a species only appear in the ScareScraper. In the ScareScraper mode, they are featured in their own mode: Polterpup Mode. In Polterpup Mode, the Luigis must hunt down as many Polterpups as possible by using their Dark-Light Devices to see the footprints. Once a Polterpup has been located, he must be flashed with the Strobulb and vacuumed up. Each Polterpup has 50 HP, but Luigi can find a Big Polterpup, which has 100 HP.

Regular and Big Polterpups in the ScareScraper mode always drop a Gold Bar when captured, even if the Poltergust 5000 is at minimal power. This means that they will drop an additional Gold Bar on top of whatever Power Surge a Luigi uses to drain its health, from two Gold Bars from a Blue Surge up to four from a Red Surge. A Polterpup drops five Gold Bars if it is captured with another ghost from a Red Surge.

Luigi's Mansion (Nintendo 3DS)
Despite not appearing in the original Luigi's Mansion, Polterpup appears in the Nintendo 3DS remake. When Luigi's amiibo is scanned, Polterpup appears when Luigi has lost all of his health by eating the Gold Bone to recover Luigi.

Luigi's Mansion 3
A Polterpup appears in Luigi's Mansion 3, the same Polterpup from the story mode of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, as Luigi kept it as a pet after the game ended.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
A Polterpup appears as an Advanced-level, support spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Appearance
Polterpups are shown as white, slightly transparent canine-like ghosts. Polterpups' eyes are white and opaque, which makes them stand out against their transparent bodies. Unlike real dogs, Polterpups lack ears, thus their head is completely rounded. Polterpups wear collars with ID tags on the bottom of them; Polterpups in Scarescraper mode wear blue collars, while the single Polterpup that appears during the Dark Moon Quest sports a red one.

|If you combine a puppy and a ghost, you'll get a cute little Polterpup. They seem to enjoy causing no end of trouble, but I couldn't tell you if they're enemies or just really mischievous. This big guy's a lot bigger than normal—hopefully he just wants to be friends?
|The little guy...or girl—who can tell—is always finding ways to cause mischief, but it's not clear whether he's your friend, your foe, or just a crazy critter who can't decide one way or the other. Still, as much of a handful as this pup can be, he's nothing compared to Big Polterpups!

Trivia
*According to a Swapnote message sent by Shigeru Miyamoto, the Polterpup is his favorite ghost.
*Polterpups leave invisible imprints when they jump through walls, floors, or ceilings, similarly to Slimer from Ghostbusters.
