They only appear in stages where [[Yoshi (species)|Yoshi]] must morph into a [[Submarine Yoshi|Submarine]]. When Yoshi touches one, he briefly sinks to the bottom. If hit by a torpedo, Loch Nestors simply grow larger and chase Yoshi, but explode after being hit multiple times. In the original game, they take a total of three hits to defeat; in ''Yoshi's New Island'', they only need to be hit twice.

Their name is a portmanteau of "{{wp|Nestor}}," a male given name, and "Loch Ness," a Scottish lake which is the home of the legendary {{wp|Loch Ness Monster}}. The lips on the Loch Nestor are exactly the same as the ones on [[Cheep Cheep|Piscatory Pete]].
