They are found in [[World 3-2 (Super Mario Land)|World 3-2]] and [[World 3-3 (Super Mario Land)|World 3-3]]. In appearance, Kumos look much like generic tarantulas that are about the size of [[Mario]]. One Kumo poses as [[Princess Daisy]], which Mario discovers after defeating [[Hiyoihoi]].

Their name comes from「{{hover|蜘蛛|クモ}}」(''kumo'', "spider" in Japanese); however, the species is not, in fact, known as "Kumo" in Japan. It is actually the only species for which the English name was not the same as or similar to the Japanese name in the original version of ''Super Mario Land'', although some other species were renamed in the English [[Virtual Console]] version.

Kumos attack in the same pattern as a [[Fighter Fly|Fly]], hopping towards Mario. Like a Fly, some of them drop downward from midair when spawned. A [[jump]] or two [[Superball Mario|Superball]]s can easily defeat a Kumo, rewarding Mario with 400 [[point]]s.

Kumos appear in the [[Super Mario Land (manga)|''Super Mario Land'' manga]]. After the [[Tokotoko]] and [[Batadon]] miserably failed in stopping Mario, [[Tatanga]] gives more trust to the spider clan in doing a better job, much to [[Hiyoihoi]]'s anger. The Kumos prepare a trap for Mario by creating a web in which [[Suu-chan]] pushes him in it. Then, she would have poured on him a lethal [[Suu]] venom on him, but the barging Tokotoko and Batadon mess their plan up, falling into the web, freeing Mario and getting hit by the venom instead, killing them. Mario falls down and is surrounded by the Kumos, to which Suu-chan orders to attack him, but Hiyoihoi appears, angered for the replacement and for the death of his soldiers, and shoots at everyone with a barrage of [[Bullet Biff]]s, killing the Kumos, accidentally saving Mario.

A Kumo also makes a small appearance in ''[[Pipe Down!]]'', although only a picture of it appears.
