Yoshis debuted in ''[[Super Mario World]]'', where they can be hatched from an egg if [[Mario]] or [[Luigi]] find them. In this game, Yoshis can eat enemies to defeat them, including enemies Mario and Luigi cannot normally defeat on their own, such as [[Spiny|Spinies]]. The green Yoshi can also use this ability to spit [[Koopa Troopa|Koopa]] shells at enemies as if Mario had kicked them, or receive different powers depending on which color of shell he is holding in his mouth.

Yoshis can also eat different colored [[Berry|Berries]] in this game, each of which have different effects.

If Mario or Luigi beats a level while riding a Yoshi, it follows them to the next level. However, Yoshis are forbidden from entering [[Ghost House]]s and [[Castle]]s, and waits for Mario and Luigi outside until they've finished the level.

In the [[Super Nintendo Entertainment System|SNES]] version of the game, [[Yellow Yoshi|Yellow]], [[Red Yoshi|Red]] and [[Blue Yoshi|Blue]] Yoshis can only be hatched from eggs in the [[Star World]], and only the green Yoshi can be found in [[Dinosaur Land]]. However, in the [[Game Boy Advance]] remake of the game, the different colored Yoshis appear at random in Dinosaur Land after they are discovered in the Star World.

In ''[[Super Mario Sunshine]]'', the Yoshi eggs start out as green but change to a different color once they eat a [[Fruit]] upon hatching. They also turn green if they are about to die from not eating another Fruit for a long time, or when they drown in water. While green, Yoshis spit water instead of juice.

A Green Yoshi appeared in ''[[Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3]]'' and the ''[[Super Mario All-Stars]]'' version of ''[[Super Mario Bros. 3]]''. The [[Pipe Land]]'s [[Kings|king]] was transformed into a Green Yoshi, which [[Ludwig von Koopa]] had done by stealing the king's [[magic wand]].

====''Super Mario 64 DS''====
A Green Yoshi appeared in ''[[Super Mario 64 DS]]'' as one of the four playable characters. This Yoshi is first shown sleeping on the roof, an homage to ''[[Super Mario 64]]''. In VS Mode, player one plays as a Green Yoshi, as other colored Yoshis take second, third, and fourth.

====''New Super Mario Bros. Wii''====
Green Yoshis appear in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. Wii]]''. They are the first Yoshis to hatch out of Yoshi Eggs when playing the game solo. However, if the player reaches the [[Goal Pole]] with Yoshi, Mario or the other character riding Yoshi will dismount Yoshi, who then waves goodbye. Therefore, only certain levels (Worlds 1-3, 2-5, 3-2, 4-5, 6-4, and 7-6) can have Yoshi. They do not appear in either World 5 or World 8.

====''Super Mario Galaxy 2''====
The Green Yoshi that appears in some galaxies of ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]'' is [[Yoshi]] himself. Yoshi has a traditional moveset, but he can also use some special power-ups like the [[Bulb Berry]]. Upon eating one of these power-ups, Yoshi's color changes until it ends, reverting it back to green.

The Green Yoshis are ridable in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. U]]''. They behave like ''[[New Super Mario Bros. Wii]]'', though unlike the previous game, Green Yoshis is the only color available. Like in ''New Super Mario Bros. Wii'' and ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'', Green Yoshis cannot be taken out of the levels they appear in.

Green Yoshis return in ''[[Super Mario Maker]]'' as ride-able mounts, though they are only available in the ''Super Mario World'' and ''New Super Mario Bros. U'' themes (they are replaced by [[Goomba's Shoe]]s in the ''Super Mario Bros.'' and ''Super Mario Bros. 3'' themes); they work just as they do in the respective games. Unlike in most games, only two Yoshis can be on screen at a time, with any additional Yoshi Eggs leaving a [[1-Up Mushroom]]. If a [[Yoshi Egg]] is given a [[Super Mushroom]], two Yoshis come out, though they run immediately. In ''[[Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island]]'' and its remake, ''[[Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3]]'', one is playable on every World's first level, and [[King Bowser's Castle (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island)|King Bowser's Castle]] in World 6, although in all other worlds, [[Blue Yoshi]] is playable on the final level. Green Yoshi is also playable in every Secret and Extra level in the game. This Yoshi seems to be the character Yoshi, though, nothing is confirmed.

In the remake, if the player manages to get 100 points in all levels, a cutscene will play which shows a Green Yoshi along with a message that says:

In ''Super Mario World'', Green Yoshi has green skin, but orange gloves, brown shoes and a brown saddle. In ''[[Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2]]'', Green Yoshi's gloves were removed to match its current appearance.

In ''[[Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island]]'', Green Yoshi looks about the same as he does in ''Super Mario World'', but with orange shoes and a red saddle. He also doesn't wear his orange gloves, and instead he has bare green arms. In the [[Game Boy Advance]] port, Green Yoshi wears red shoes.

From ''[[Yoshi's Story]]'' to ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'', Green Yoshi has red shoes and a red saddle. From ''[[Super Mario Sunshine]]'' and on, Green Yoshi has orange shoes and a red saddle, except for ''[[Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door]]'', where the shoes are again red.
