The Delfino Airstrip is a seaside location where tourists first come to when visiting Isle Delfino by plane. It is a simple landing strip built on small islets in the waters near Delfino Plaza. Travelers can reach the mainland via small boats.

Episode 1: Delfino Airstrip Dilemma
After arriving at Delfino Airstrip, Mario finds F.L.U.D.D.. Princess Peach and the Toads find a Polluted Piranha, forcing Mario to spray it with F.L.U.D.D and kill it. This reveals the first shine sprite in the game.
Episode 2: Red Coins of the Airstrip
After returning later in the game to the Airstrip, Mario must get 8 red coins by using the Turbo Nozzle, revealing a Shine Sprite.

Delfino Airstrip is the first area encountered in Super Mario Sunshine, and is the place where FLUDD is encountered as well as where the first Shine Sprite is encountered. It cannot be revisited until after the player gains access to Corona Mountain. After entering the mountain (it is not necessary to complete it; the player may simply pause the game and select "Exit Area" to leave), the player can pay ten coins to a Pianta at Delfino Plaza to ride a boat to the airstrip.
When Mario, Princess Peach, and Toadsworth landed here, the plane almost crashed since Goop was in the middle of the airstrip. When Toadsworth asked Mario to gather information about the situation, he instead found F.L.U.D.D., who proved to be valuable in getting rid of the Goop. Peach also sees Shadow Mario at the airstrip. Mario and F.L.U.D.D. then started squirting the Goop until all that was left was the center, which could not be cleaned away as easily. Out came a huge Polluted Piranha, which Mario had to defeat by squirting into its open mouth three times with F.L.U.D.D. When the plant was beaten, all the Goop cleared away, the center platform rose, and out came a Shine Sprite.

Super Smash Bros. series
It wasn't until Mario defeated Bowser and Bowser Jr. that he would have come back to the Airstrip. There he would collect Red Coins and earn another Shine Sprite. Also, when he came back to the Airstrip it was inhabited with Strollin' Stus. Alternatively, it is possible for Mario to visit the Airstrip before defeating Bowser - the player simply has to enter Corona Mountain and leave again, and the boat to the Airstrip will be available. To get on the boat, a Pianta will ask the player to pay him ten Coins, or else he can not ride on the boat to the Airstrip.
Delfino Airstrip only makes a small cameo in the Super Smash Bros. series in the background of the Delfino Plaza stage, which appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The airstrip's model seems to be largely simplified from its appearance in Super Mario Sunshine, in that it simply looks like a floating block in the ocean.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Nozzle boxes appear during Mario's second visit. The Rocket Nozzle does not appear anywhere on the airstrip, although if desired, the player is able to take any nozzle from Delfino Plaza to the Airstrip, allowing them to use the Rocket Nozzle there.

Underground Theme
The "Delfino Airstrip" theme is an elongated arrangement of the "Underground Theme" from Super Mario Bros. played on strings and piano backed by tropical percussion. When the player returns to the airstrip, "Isle Delfino" plays instead.

Trivia
Trivia
*After completing the game and going back to the airstrip, the Guide Book will erroneously display Mario's location as being in Delfino Plaza. The airstrip is considered a submap of the plaza because its 100 Coin Shine is also the same as the 100-Coin Shine for Delfino Plaza. The Blue Coin on the airstrip is also counted as part of Delfino Plaza's Blue Coin count.
*After completing the game and going back to the airstrip, the Guide Book will erronously display Mario's location as being in Delfino Plaza.
*Through an elaborate glitch, it is possible for Mario to have the Turbo Nozzle when playing Delfino Airstrip for the first time. If he attempts to bust down the wooden doors this way, the game crashes.
*The music heard the first time the player is in the airstrip is a mysterious remix of the original 'Underground BGM' music from Super Mario Bros.. When the player returns to the airstrip, the Delfino Plaza music plays instead.

*The Goop in the center of the airstrip is in the shape of Mario's face. One can make out the mustache and the hat with the signature "M" on it. (See above)
