According to various pieces of official media, starting with Donkey Kong Country, Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong from the arcade games appearing in Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3. During his youthful prime, Cranky Kong kidnapped Pauline and took her to a construction site, was kidnapped and trapped in a cage by Mario, and even battled Stanley in various greenhouses. He also implies in one of his lectures to his grandson that his kidnapping of Pauline was consistent enough that he did so "seven days a week." Not counting the "Modern" mixes in the Game & Watch Gallery series or a cameo in Mario Clash, his final role as Donkey Kong was in Donkey Kong for Game Boy. He retired after he relinquished the name to his grandson.better source
