The Coin Challenge Packs are a series of Coin Rush downloadable content released for New Super Mario Bros. 2. The main goal of the packs are to collect a high enough count of coins and submit them to the leaderboards on the official New Super Mario Bros. 2 website.

There are 3 different packs, which each is rated three out of five stars in difficulty and also costs 2 blocks for each pack to download.

Coin Challenge Pack A[1] (named Challenge the Record A in Japan[2]) is the first of three Coin Rush packs released in Japan, Europe, Australia on October 2nd, 2012, and in North America on October 4th, 2012.

A sky level similar to World Mushroom-1, with many multicolored blocks and Fire Flower Pipes that spawn Golden Mushrooms.

Star Coins[edit]

  • Star Coin 1: In the very start of the level, on the left set of blocks. The player must jump from the second highest block on the right set to reach it.
  • Star Coin 2: A hidden vine can be found before the third Star Coin. Using the vine will lead to an area that has the second Star Coin, along with a P Switch.
  • Star Coin 3: Within a maze of blocks and pipes. The player must go to the farthest right entrance of the maze and move left.

A level similar to World 2-2, but in a mountainous area instead out the cloudy skies. This level has platforms that go up or down when the player jumps on them.

Star Coins[edit]

  • Star Coin 1: Below and to the left of the second moving platform.
  • Star Coin 2: In a bonus area, which can only be accessed by a Cannon Pipe.
  • Star Coin 3: Just before the Goal Pole, high above the Fuzzies.

A Castle level in a volcanic area, filled with Donut Blocks and Sledge Bros..

Star Coins[edit]

  • Star Coin 1: Guarded by a Sledge Bro., on a platform over lava.
  • Star Coin 2: In a bonus area filled with Hammer Bros., which can only be accessed by a subtly covered red Pipe. It is below a few Brick Blocks and a P-Switch need to be activated to stop the player from falling into the lava.
  • Star Coin 3: Guarded by a Sledge Bro., on Donut Blocks on the top of the screen. The player has to be Raccoon Mario to reach it, or use a Springboard found a screen back.

Coin Challenge Pack B[3] (named Challenge the Record B in Japan) is the second of three Coin Rush packs to be released by the end of October.

Star Coins[edit]

  • Star Coin 1: In the first room, the Star Coin is located on the top right of the page, and can be accessed using the uppermost platform that appears using the Question Switch.
  • Star Coin 2: In the second room, the player should take the bottom left door. After reaching the end of that room, the next room contains the Star Coin after several One-Way Flippers. It can be accessed by hitting the Question Switch near the bottom of the room.
  • Star Coin 3: In the room with the disappearing and reappearing platforms, the Star Coin is located in an area on the top right of the room.

A sky level with Bullet Bills and Banzai Bills.

Star Coins[edit]

  • Star Coin 1: Before the end of the first section, the Star Coin is floating high above near the Warp Pipe.
  • Star Coin 2: The Star Coin is located amongst a wall of Brick Blocks, and can be unveiled by using the POW Blocks.
  • Star Coin 3: Shortly before the Banzai Bill Blasters near the end of the stage, the Star Coin is hidden in an area accessible by wall jumping.

An outside volcano level with a castle foreground. The volcanoes in the background erupt, launching Raining Debris at the player; 10 Gold Coins and occasionally 100 Gold Coins fly down with them.

Star Coins[edit]

  • Star Coin 1: Before the Checkpoint Flag, the Star Coin occasionally floats down from above and arcs back.
  • Star Coin 2: Going down the gold Warp Pipe near the Checkpoint Flag takes the player to an underground area with several Swoopers and the Star Coin.
  • Star Coin 3: Before the Flagpole, the Star Coin is underneath several Brick Blocks but is floating over a bottomless pit.

Coin Challenge Pack C (named Challenge the Record C in Japan) is the third of three Coin Rush packs to be released on December 5, 2012. It was originally intended to be the sixth DLC pack, but the release of the Gold Classics Pack in late November due to players getting 3 billion coins resulted in it being bumped to 7, while Platform Panic Pack, the original #7, was bumped to 8.

A beach level with themed rooms centered around every single power-up in the game. Mastery of each power-up to navigate these rooms is required to get as many coins as possible.

Star Coins[edit]

  • Star Coin 1: In Racoon Mario's room, Mario must use the Racoon Leaf to fly to the upper area. The Star Coin is on the left hand side.
  • Star Coin 2: In Mega Mario's room, Mario must use the Mega Mushroom to go all the way to the right hand side. The Star Coin is located inside a square of blocks only Mega Mario can break.
  • Star Coin 3: In Gold Mario's room (the final area), Mario must perform a triple jump through the spikes, following the lines of coins. The Star Coin is located high up and can be collected midway through the third jump.

An underground desert level focusing on the Gold Flower.

Star Coins[edit]

  • Star Coin 1: In the first Underground room, Mario must obtain a Springboard from one of the blocks. Before entering the pipe, he must use the Spring Board to reveal two invisible blocks up above, attached to either wall. Mario must use these to take the Springboard up to this new area, and then use the Springboard to enter the yellow pipe up above, containing the Star Coin.
  • Star Coin 2: In the room with the Midway Flag, Mario must wall jump up to the top left to find a secret route. The Star Coin is located within a square of blocks. Two of the bottom blocks are Multiple Coin blocks, and must be successfully hit enough times to turn gold in order to remove them and access the coin. If Mario fails to turn the blocks gold, the Star Coin becomes inaccessible.
  • Star Coin 3: Near the end of the same secret route containing Star Coin 2, Mario must navigate down to the bottom of the area with the blocks he can walk in front of. The Star Coin is in plain sight.

A volcano level with a down-going Bonecoaster ride.

Star Coins[edit]

  • Star Coin 1: Found in plain sight on the way down the first shaft. Mario can reach it by destroying the surrounding Brick Blocks with a Gold Flower, or by hitting the POW Block below the Star Coin.
  • Star Coin 2: At the bottom of the first shaft, when the Bonecoaster begins to go right, the Star Coin can be seen against the far left wall. Mario must quickly jump over to it, and then wall jump to get back on the Bonecoaster before he falls in the lava.
  • Star Coin 3: In the second shaft, going up, the path very briefly splits into two sides. Mario must stay on the left, where the Star Coin will appear next to the wall.
