Cherbils and their cousins seem to be named for cherries, which they vaguely resemble, and possibly gerbil, a small rodent. Their use of gases could also make their name come from {{wp|Chernobyl}}, a city in Ukraine which was the site of a {{wp|Chernobyl disaster|nuclear disaster}} in 1986.

*[[O'Chunks]] mentions Cherbils when he wants to get [[Count Bleck]] to get him to fight [[Mario]]. He alludes to their bottom-like appearance by saying he'll "Spank (Clobber in the British English version) 'em like naughty little Cherbils". [[Tippi]]'s [[tattle]] on the Cherbils also supports this claim. Additionally, their common drop of [[Peachy Peach]]es may be a subtle joke regarding the fruit's own bottom-like shape.
