Unlike most other karts, the exhaust pipe is located on the top of the trunk of the vehicle, underneath its spoiler. It offers a boost in speed and weight, but a decrease in acceleration and a large decrease in traction. It has identical stats to the [[Mach 8]] and [[Circuit Special]].

Like the Circuit Special, its engine sound is reminiscent of a real-world racing car, and the Sports Coupe is also one of the vehicles in ''Mario Kart 8'' to have a supercharged engine (but is twin turbocharged), which almost sounds like a {{wp|flat-six engine}} from a {{wp|Porsche 911 GT3}}, but is actually a DOHC {{wp|V6 engine}}. The 150cc Time Trial staff ghosts for [[Mario Kart Stadium]] in both ''Mario Kart 8'' and ''Mario Kart 8 Deluxe'' use [[Mario]] on the Sports Coupe with [[Standard (tire)|Standard]] tires and the [[Super Glider]].

It increases the duration of [[Rocket Start]] boosts and the amount of points earned for performing a Rocket Start.
