That's a joke, referring to how he's like the old grouchy guy who only talks about retro games. Actually the events of other DK games are indirectly mentionned in-game (Cranky refers to how DK's Banana Hoard keeps getting stolen) so it's most likely DKCR Donkey is DKC Donkey. Plus it doesn't matter if Cranky is DK's father or grandfather, as it's a possibility DK's father died and thus Cranky raised him, which explains why he calls him both his son and grandson.
