In its debut in ''[[Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars]]'', Star Hill is located in the southwest region of [[Mario World|Mario's world]] and is made out of many smaller hills that look like dark-blue meteorites resembling the [[moon]]. Mario, [[Mallow]], and [[Geno]] travel here for one of the seven [[Star Piece (Super Mario RPG)|Star Pieces]]. This Star Piece is the only one that can be taken without a fight; it rests on the ground at the end of Star Hill, the only Star Piece not guarded by a boss (likely because there were several bosses in [[Booster Tower]] and [[Marrymore]]).


It has a strange appearance, being made of what appears to be dark blue rock and having the appearance of what seems to be a large fallen meteor. The hill is made of a large group of many smaller hills. It is impossible to traverse the entire hill simply by walking; the only way to access different areas is by lighting several of the unusual star-shaped flowers, causing a keyhole in a large white star in the area to grow. Going through the enlarged keyhole allows the enterer to travel to another area instantly, and the keyhole shrinks behind them.

The hill is quite large and its inhabitants include [[Gecko|Geckos]], [[Mastadoom|Mastadooms]], [[Mukumuku|Mukumukus]], [[Pulsar|Pulsars]], and [[Sackit|Sackits]].
At the time of this game's events, [[Smithy]]'s monsters have overrun the terrain. This includes [[Gecko]]s, [[Mastadoom]]s, [[Thropher]]s, [[Pulsar]]s, and [[Sackit]]s.


Since its first appearance, it has become a recurring element in subsequent RPG games. In ''[[Paper Mario]]'', it was located just north of Toad Town, and it had a similar purpose. It was noticeably less dangerous to travel in this time around. In the English version, it was renamed [[Shooting Star Summit]] (check there for its role in that game).
Several of the wishes associated with the fallen stars on Star Hill are fulfilled during the events of the game. Returning to Star Hill and inspecting the stars again will prompt a different response in recognition of this.

The [[Star Shrine]] is located near Star Hill in ''Partners in Time'' and the Hill is the location where the [[boss]] [[Commander Shroob]] is fought. It is quite a small level and enemies include [[Love Bubble|Love Bubbles]], [[Handfake|Handfakes]] and [[Fly Guy|Fly Guys]]. The "spirit of the [[Cobalt Star]]" (in reality [[Elder Princess Shroob]]) speaks to the Mario Bros. on top of the hill after Commander Shroob is defeated. In [[Super Mario RPG (Nintendo Switch)|the Switch remake]], Star Hill is the focus of the remake's new post-game content. While resting in Marrymore, Geno sees an odd light at Star Hill, and when Mario and his allies investigate, they find new wishing stars have fallen on the hill, colored pink. These wishes are from villains the group had previously fought and serve as clues to their identities. Once each of them is defeated again, their wishes change to reflect this.

During the events of the storyline, [[Eldstar]] notifies [[Mario]] in a dream to head to the summit for counsel after [[Bowser]] takes Peach's castle to the sky and easily KOs Mario. Note: Star Hill has two names in Japanese. The first name is used in ''[[Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars]]'' and ''[[Paper Mario]]''. The second name is seen in ''[[Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time]]''. The second name almost translates similarly, but is a bit different. Given it being a similar area, with a similar name, and located just north of Peach's castle like its second appearance, it is meant to be the same location even with its renaming.
