To use the move, the player that utilizes the items must press either the {{button|gcn|L}} button to do a Slide Attack to the left or the {{button|gcn|R}} button to do it to the right. Because the move quickly shifts the kart slightly to the left or right, it can be either useful or a hindrance to the driver, depending on the time used.

If [[Baby Mario]], [[Baby Luigi]], [[Toad]], or [[Toadette]] hold an item that causes them to face the player ([[Banana]]s, [[Fake Item Box]]es, [[Mushroom]]s, etc.), they slide attack in the wrong direction.
