Typically, a subject's notability is determined by two factors: 1) if there is an official name for the subject (i.e., an actual proper noun with capital letters, like "Goomba" or "Luigi," not say "sand"), and 2) the subject makes an actual appearance in the media it is referenced in (otherwise an officially named subject would be an [[:category:Implied|implied]] subject).  Outside these criteria, it becomes difficult determining what and what should not have an article.  The lists you were creating were basically listing of more lists, or other minor subjects.  That's why we have categories - to generate lists of the articles the category is placed on.  That would have worked better.  List articles are usually created for MAJOR category subjects (like [[characters]]) or if the list is actually offering commentary on a notable subject (like [[King Koopa's alter egos]]).
