The Vault Guard shows Mario about one of the items he is about to encounter later in his adventure

The Vault Guard is a Toad in charge of guarding the treasury of the Mushroom Kingdom. In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, the Chancellor gave Mario access to the vault to help the hero in his quest to find Princess Peach. The Vault Guard accompanied Mario to the vault and explained how various items worked.

Although he is supposed to guard a vital part of the castle, the Vault Guard is, in fact, a big coward. For example, during Mack's invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom, the Vault Guard ran away and hid in the guest room instead of protecting the treasures of the vault.
