Vault is a Gymnastics Event that appears in the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. It is set in the National Indoor Stadium. The objective of the event is to score as many points as possible by performing tricks after jumping from the vault. Lakitu and Toad appear as referees in this event.

Gameplay

In this event, the player starts by running up to the springboard by sliding left and right on the Touch Screen. The faster they slide, the faster their character will run and the more time they will have in the air, although performing the jump with good timing will be harder. Their speed is indicated by a meter in the top left of the Touch Screen and will not deplete if the player stops sliding. Once the player reaches the springboard, they must Touch the Touch Screen once to take off, with the timing of their tap affecting the amount of time they will have in the air to perform moves. Once in the air, the player must perform a series of moves that consist of tapping numbers, up to a maximum of five, in order, causing the character to perform a number of various flips and turns in the air, depending on how many numbers they were able to tap in time. Each set of numbers is timed, however if they are able to tap all of them in time the player will receive a "Good" rating. The number of flips they were able to perform is recorded onscreen. Once they approach the floor, the player must tap when the exclamation mark symbol appears onscreen to perform a perfect immediate landing without staggering and receive a "Great" rating. If they tap too late, a balance meter will appear onscreen and the player must touch when the indicator is in the middle of the green part of the meter to cause their character to remain standing. If they fail to do so, the character will fall over. The player is given two attempts, with the average of the two being their final score that decides their placing in the event. The score is affected by the number of flips, the speed and timing of the takeoff and the landing.

Controls

  • Use the stylus to play this event.
  • Run by sliding left and right on the Touch Screen.
  • As you touch the vaulting horse, touch the Touch Screen to push off. A good push off gives you longer performance time.
  • In midair, touch commands will appear on the Touch Screen. Touch them in order, starting with the smaller numbers.
  • More successful touches will result in bigger moves!
  • Touch the Touch Screen at the moment the character lands on the floor to stick your landing and avoid staggering.
  • If the character staggers, touch the middle of the balance meter to stop.

Missions

  • Mario: Mario's second mission is to score between seven and eight points.
  • Peach: Peach's first mission is to perform a perfect landing.
  • Tails: Tails' second mission is to input four commands without making a mistake.
