Informal Reminder[edit]

Hi, when making edits like what you did at Meteor Melee, please keep the number of edits to a minimum (i.e., one major edit) and click the "Show preview" button (to the right of the "Save changes" button) to make sure your edit is actually desired, as floods of edits fill up the recent changes, and on top of that, making too many consecutive edits to one page counts as a level one offense under the wiki's warning policy. Ohhhh I'm so sorry about that! Yeah I actually thought that might fill up the recent edits too much. Its just that on my phone I have two tabs, one for editing the wiki and one for getting the information. And whenever I leave the tab, it doesn't save my changes when I got back to it, so that's why I save all the time. I'm so sorry about that! I guess I will have to get all the information that i will use, then save it in one big edit. Again, sorry about that! :)

Quick tip[edit]

If you want to pluralise a link by adding an "s", you can simply add it after the brackets instead of writing the name twice: [[Lakitu]]s (instead of [[Lakitu|Lakitus]]) Works the same and saves time!

But if the plural form changes the spelling of the original name, you'll need to write it in the [[Bumpty|Bumpties]] form. Mario JC 00:34, 21 April 2017 (EDT)

RE: My Application to Write for the 'Shroom[edit]

Hey there, I'm glad you are interested in writing for us, but there's a couple of things you'll have to do. Firstly, the purpose of a demo is that it will actually be used as your introductory section should you be accepted, so I would recommend writing a little more. oh, really, AWESOME!! I guess I didn't notice because I literally saw the edit Owen made where he deleted the stub and said it wasn't a stub anymore. Yeah, the DKR courses took me a while. Espically because nobody has footage of the DS exclusive levels on the internet. LOL. The only source I used were these really blurry videos of them on youtube. It was all squinting for me! Already existing images[edit]

You're uploading images that already exist on the wiki. File:Fawful Artwork - Bowser's Inside Story.png already exists as File:Fawful artwork MLBiS.png, and File:MK8 Electrodome trac.jpg already exists as File:MK8-Course-Electrodrome.jpg. Before uploading an image, please check to see if the image isn't already uploaded elsewhere.

On the topic of personal images, you should sign them with {{personal-image|Tommy8353}}, and you can only have up to four. Additionally, when uploading images, you need to categorize them, as well as give them the {{aboutfile}} template. Here's some examples:

Hello, Toadwill. Good job on your recent uploads, but when uploading files, keep in mind that you must correctly categorize the file. It's simple to learn how to do so. Just search for the correct category by starting with the following groups:

Images	Audio/video files
Company images Film images Game images Merchandise images Publication images System images Television series images Website images	Company media files Film media files Game media files Merchandise media files Publication media files System media files Television series media files Website media files

When uploading, copy the full title of the category and insert it in square brackets into the summary text box below the {{aboutfile}} template, replacing the {{uncategorized}} template entirely. If you're using the upload function from the text editor, simply add the category link to the description. For example, files related to the game Super Mario World would use:

[[Category:Super Mario World images]]

or

[[Category:Super Mario World media files]]

Please consider the above information before uploading more files. Keep in mind that some files can belong to multiple categories. Do not put images into the media files category, or vice versa. If you continue uploading files without categorizing them correctly, then a warning will be issued. Thank you for reading, and keep contributing.

Hello, Toadwill. Good job on your recent uploads, but when uploading files, keep in mind that you must correctly use the {{aboutfile}} template. What you were doing looks like this, and it is an inconvenience for other users to fix up the template. It is simple to learn how to format it correctly. The pre-loaded coding is shown below.

|1=Subject of the image
|2=Where you found the image
|3=Artist
|4=Describe edits, if any
|5=Other versions (use file link)
}}

Just replace the necessary parts with that corresponding information, and remove the entire line of the variable(s) you don't use. If you do not wish to use the template at all, then it is acceptable to simply remove it before you upload the file. Please consider the above information before uploading more files. If you continue using {{aboutfile}} incorrectly, then a warning will be issued. Thank you for reading, and keep contributing.

okay, I understand that some images already exist. But I find it stupid that I have to categorize my pictures when I'm only going to use them for my userbox tower! I don't want to upload them. I realllllly think this wiki should allow users to import images withought uploading and explaining allllll about them when you just need hem for your userbox tower. Sorry if I was mean, thank you! You don't necessarily need to categorize personal images, as the {{personal-image}} template will do that for you. However, if the image already exists, you can use that image instead in your userbox instead of uploading a similar one. Uploading an image purely for your userboxes is fine, but if the image you're uploading already exists, use that one instead.

It's policy to tag images for personal use with {{personal-image}}. If you want to import as you say, upload to Imgur or something and use the URL it generates (not the album one but the direct link to the file, see my userpage to see what I mean) and paste the link onto your userpage. uhhhh, I don't really understand even though I looked at the page. Are personal images defined as all the images that are not somewhere on this wiki? If that's true, I think that's stupid if I can only have four......unless you mean camera taken photos completely unrelated to mario, then that makes sense. Please help me understand! Thanks! Concerning image uploaded to the wiki itself, you can only have four marked as a personal image. However, you can simply paste the URL of an image onto your user page to get the same result. Using an image on here as an example, pasting https://www.mariowiki.com/images/7/75/Mario.png on your page will produce

as a result, without wasting an upload. Keep in mind, however, that these linked images will not work in userboxes.

The MarioWiki definition, a personal image is defined as an uploaded file which its intent was to be used personally by users and their personal pages and no where else (see MarioWiki:Userspace for details). If you upload a file that can be used somewhere other than userpages (like say Princess Peach or Dusty Dune Galaxy), then this can be disregarded, but keep in mind that if those uploads can no longer serve the wiki in any capacity or obsolesces, it is eligible for deletion. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) ^{(Stats - Contribs)} 17:50, 24 April 2017 (EDT)

If you notice an article needs an image, and you have a way of providing it, then by all means upload it and include it into the article. Just remember to follow the category and aboutfile rules above! :)

okay, I'm soooo confused. If I want to use an image off of, say, Google images, and it isnt on the wiki, would that take up a personal image slot? My understanding is that it won't count as a personal image slot if I use the about file template explaining the source of the image, is that correct? Thanks, once again. Alright, let's see how I can explain this... A personal image is an image uploaded to this wiki solely for the purpose of using it on your userpage. Everything else is a standard image.

Honestly, I'd recommend against using Google images as a source, as the quality of the image can fluctuate depending on where it's coming from. But if that's the only place where you can find said image, as opposed to taking a snapshot of a game yourself, then I guess that's alright?

Because it says it's for adding information about where you got the image from, so most likely that image would not be on the wiki and on some other website, isn't that what it is for? You can neglect the aboutfile template and categories for personal images. Using the aboutfile template on a personal image is entirely optional.

Yes to the first question. You just have to be using it on your userpage, otherwise it may end up getting deleted.

The aboutfile template is used to tell viewers what the subject of the image is, where the image was found (if available), etc. (See the aboutfile-reminder template above). Never should there be two images showing the exact same thing; if that's the case, one will end up getting deleted.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the aboutfile template is entirely optional regardless of what type of image you're using it for. If you don't know what to put down in the template, just get rid of it completely! The aboutfile is automatically listed when uploading a new image, so just simply fill in the parameters and remove the ones you don't need. I realize the rules we have on images can be somewhat off-putting at first, but there isn't a lot and they are pretty simple. Practice makes perfect after all.

Now it just allllll came to me! I understand! Thanks so much! You should reallllllly considering rewriting the rules cuz I did not understand anything. Alright, two last questions: when you said an image with an about file template on my user page would otherwise get deleted, what did you mean? Since it's optional for every type of photo, why would it be deleted withought it? My next question is since you said I need to apply the rules to uploading images to articles, since I have to use an about file template, (obviously cuz it's not on the wiki if the article requests an image) if I can't find any sources on the internet, what if I have the game and go to the point in the game where I need to take a screenshot? What would I put for things like the resource and things like that? If I can understand your two answers to these questions, we should be about wrapped up here. Thanks! For the first question, I misunderstood on my part. What I meant was you have to be using your personal image on your userpage, otherwise it could get deleted. Whether you use an aboutfile template on a personal image or not is up to you.

If you're uploading an image directly from the game (through the Wii U's browser, for example), you can either list the source as "In game screenshot" or just simply leave it blank. If you pull an image from, say, the Spriter's Resource site, you would list the page you found it on. Give credit where credit is due, yeah?

If you have any further questions, don't be afraid to ask an experienced someone (Most users are usually willing to help), or simply check out some of the links provided in your welcome template at the top of this page. I still view mine sometimes, even after editing on this wiki for about three years :)

I'll fill in for images using Google Image Search. The only time you should use Google Image Search is for art that you can't seem to find from reliable sources (I think there is a list of said reliable sources as a policy page). When you do use Google Image Search, the search itself is not the source of the image because a search result is an index of materials matching the search query. Also the index can change, meaning the real source can be lost forever. In this case, click visit page. That is your source URL. Clicking view image is for the image itself to make uploading easier. For screenshots and sprites, use Spriter's Resource or my guide to obtain them. My guide allows for maximum control over taking a good screenshot compared to getting the images elsewhere. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) ^{(Stats - Contribs)} 19:19, 24 April 2017 (EDT)

I'm not entirely sure what qualifies as a reliable source, other than from official sites themselves like Nintendo.com or an image screenshot of your own. Though I know unreliable sites are usually those run by fans, such as pulling an image from DeviantArt or other wikis.

I added the necessary templates and categories. Give it a look for some inspiration.

Also, when uploading an image, the aboutfile template should already be there. Fill out the correct parameters, give the image the proper license, and replace {{uncategorized}} with the proper category/categories (in this case Category:Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga Images.

If you click "Edit" at the top of the image page, it'll show you the coding used for the templates. The category links are placed on the bar at the bottom of the page, regardless of where they are placed in the coding.

You are forgetting one detail required by all non-personal images: The licensing templates. Sample code:

How To Get Better Images[edit]

Before you get too deep with supplying images for articles that need to be created for Super Mario Bros., please consider my WIP guide how to get high quality images from games of various platforms. If you can't do that, tag your uploads with {{image-quality}} so that way some one else can get to it ASAP. Additionally, this is something I've noticed you do a lot, when naming an image, please make sure there's no space between the file name and the file type. For example, I moved File:SMM Adventure in Sarasaland .jpg to File:SMM Adventure in Sarasaland.jpg. If there's a space between the name and type, it can make placing the image on pages confusing for some users.
