The 'Shroom Images

I noticed you and a few other admins have been untagging images for deletion if they are used for The 'Shroom. I get that this decision is made to preserve older issues of The 'Shroom but I tag them for deletion because if you look at MediaWiki Categories, they appear as duplicates because they have been categorized as such, such as Category:Super Paper Mario Images and Category:Mario Kart DS Images for examples. I was hoping an admin would make minor changes to The 'Shroom articles that used the outdated image to use the more up-to-date image. This has mostly been occurring with PNGs that used to be GIFs or JPEGs. Should I instead just remove the categorization for the outdated images so they won't be thought of as accidental duplicates? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 21:39, 28 December 2015 (EST)

I believe server space is not an issue at the moment (though I could be wrong), so no need to worry about that now. Salut ! I was editing the Lumacomète article, and I was wondering what's the wiki policy for the "Names in other languages" table if the article is named after an official non-English source. Should I add the French name in the table? Seems a bit redundant, but then again, why not? Cheers.

It seems that quite a few of these articles are actually named after translations of official Japanese names; however I can't always tell if it's a translation or a romanization. I know that the wiki policy is to use English names when the Japanese is loaning English words, but I don't speak Japanese. Do you think articles like Armored Stinga, Balloon Bridge, Bat (Donkey Kong), Beam Robota, etc. have proper titles?

I made quite a few changes to the page and it needs a look. I was trying to give examples of N64 games where 640x480 is supported. Wii U: I just found out you can upload screenshots of whatever you are playing anywhere as long as the webpage supports an upload file feature (such as Special:Upload). Limited to JPEGs. The Wii U has special handlers that will show the TV and GamePad screens instead of the open file dialog box of a regular computer. Upon my personal discovery, I'm starting to suspect the Wii U cannot render games in 1920x1080 (1080p or 1080i). Sure, the Wii U can output 1080p, but rendering a 3D image is a separate process. I think the Wii U is simply upscaling 1280x720 (720p or 720i). Don't know for sure. This could explain why Mario Kart TV YouTube renders (example) are 720p at max and why the screenshots I am uploading are 1280x720. This doesn't explain the 1920x1080 Gallery:Super Mario Maker E3 press release images though.

CD-i: The current Super Mario's Wacky Worlds screenshots are 2x native but it is salvageable right away to scale them to 1x native. For a while now, whenever I see an improperly scaled image that the game is sprite-based and doesn't use true 3D, I shrink the image down to 1x native with no detail loss but rather removing redundant pixels. It's quite easy in FastStone Image Viewer with no filter applied during reduction. The only catch is that the multiple native resolutions have to be an integer multiplied by the 1x native resolution (768x560 is 2x 384x280). I resize the image by ((1 / x) * 100)% where x is multiple times native.

The new category is the whole reason I started the proposal. It seems like some users who pay attention to Category:Images to be reuploaded with higher quality don't appreciate the current congestion that category is experiencing. The knee jerk reaction for some of those people is to remove the unwanted tag but that doesn't solve the problem that a better image needs to be uploaded as the removed tag reduces the chances of it happening. The new categories I was suggesting is my attempt to make the already existing category less congested and more manageable while still requesting better images be uploaded. I don't know if I am communicating that effectively to the people opposing my proposal. Believe me, I have considered some of their points. Bazooka Mario (talk), I made a much clearer definition of how to use my proposed tags and may consider expanding from the two proposed subcategories to even more subcategories relating to the image type (screenshot, sprite, or 3Drender). I am even actively looking for some suggestions now that she has brought new information to me. Baby Luigi (talk), this user has concerns about using tags in general as the tagging can cause alienation. I tried to counterpoint that. I mostly OK with her oppose vote. The only person that I truly feel that might be misinformed about my proposal is Megadardery (talk). My screenshot sandbox has nothing to do with the proposal. The proposal is strictly figuring out how to divide the congestion of Category:Images to be reuploaded with higher quality by creating new tags and better defining how to use certain tags to avoid conflict so that way more time is spent getting better images uploaded and less time debating.   • Due to policy in that you can't edit after 3 days since the proposal is launched, I'm leaning oppose because it's a tricky issue that hasn't been addressed in entirety from other users' input to make it a recommended proposal to pass:
    • Being scared of JPGs and uploading all on PNGs
    • Standards on how game screenshots should be captured from an emulator
    • User participation of uploading images in comparison to just editing wiki pages
    • Lamenting on uploading better quality and higher resolution of game artwork that's out of our control
    • ...and probably more that I missed.
  • "Stricter Image Quality Tag Policy, Additional Image Quality Sub-templates, and Dividing Images in Category:Images to be reuploaded with higher quality Into Subcategories"
    • It sounds like 3 proposals in one to be honest, might be factoring reason of opposing.
    • All of them have to be in good order due to the proposal being an all-or-nothing format. If one of them is faulty, all of them are.
    • If it is a support-oppose individually in those three proposals within a proposal and not support-oppose all three at once, there wouldn't be an urge to auto-oppose all if one of the parts are bad.

'Shroom Images Appearing in Special:UnusedFiles

I've been thinking about this for a while. I know not to mark 'Shroom images for deletion but so they stop showing up in Special:UnusedFiles, would it be OK to create an archival page of some sort for all 'Shroom images that appear to be going unused? That way we can make room for files not 'Shroom-related to show up in Special:UnusedFiles?

I guess the best method is to create 23 pages worth of The 'Shroom:Archive/images (2216 right now) for Category:Shroom images:

1. The 'Shroom:Archive/images/1
2. The 'Shroom:Archive/images/2
3. The 'Shroom:Archive/images/...
4. The 'Shroom:Archive/images/23

The 23rd page will be the starting place for future 'Shroom Images and new pages will be created once 23rd fills up. That way the images are guaranteed to be used at least once, freeing up slots in Special:UnusedImages. Of course we can work on how many images per page if 100 is too many. I already have all files logged into a text file on my computer to make this very easy to create. Hearing the news about our archive suggestion being rejected has got me curious what the solution could ultimately be. Two things are coming to mind how the solution will take shape. The first idea is that MarioWiki will get a set-up similar to that of Wikimedia Commons. The simplest way is still the archive page way with my text file of all 2,216 files ready to go (preferably a gallery setup), but that was rejected unless you can put the images in new pages for your own personal use. Simpler would be a way to search through Category:Shroom images for the ones that aren't being used and take only those files to put into an archive (less files essentially but unsure how many that is), but you don't know how to go about doing that, if anyone else knows, or it is even possible. Supposedly Megadardery (talk) is a self-proclaimed expert with MediaWiki. Maybe he can help with our dilemma. Also that MediaWiki help page you suggested could be another alternative if Porplemontage (talk) approves. The only down side I can potentially see is that all unused images have a category for them. So, earlier this year, User:Yoshi876 removed many screenshots from the Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga special moves : Splash Bros., Knockback Bros., Chopper Bros., Swing Bros., Bounce Bros., Fire Bros., Cyclone Bros., Thunder Bros.. Because it fell under the strategy part. Unfortunately, that means that a lot of images went unused, I didn't want to tag them all with delete, because I'm still not 100% sure that they are completely unneeded, so I decided to ask you if you have any opinions on that matter, otherwise, if you have time, please delete them.

Deleting Images

Just something that has been bugging me for the past couple of months. I noticed that images in Category:Pages to be deleted are not being deleted in a timely manner but is rather taking days or weeks to see deletion. Months ago as I was editing and getting more familiar with MarioWiki's contents, I noticed that images were being deleted within 48 hours, which seemed more reasonable at the time. Administrators check this page on a regular basis, so there is no need to contact one and specifically ask for them to delete any backlogs that may accumulate in the meantime. However, if a specific page needs to be deleted to make room for moving a different article to that title, if something needs to be deleted as part of a passed proposal, or if there are other time-sensitive matters involved, contacting an admin to delete the pages or files in question as soon as possible is perfectly acceptable.

Funny Story

Wow. You put me in quite a position here to get a better quality image supplied for File:Pm btl 01.png. I just past this part by redoing the game (at Moustafa currently). Luckily cheating was on my side. I started over again but this time, I was able to warp myself to a more favorable spot in the game and work my way back to the Buzzar battle since this boss can only be fought once. Users NewtFlavouredPopcorn and Paper mario fan have been going back and forth posting spam on each other's talk pages. They don't seem to be trolls or spammers, they just seem to be having fun with each other. I contacted Crocodile Dippy about two months ago applying for a position for the "Fangame Reviews." I was told to re-send in an application (as I sent in my earlier work before from, like... five years ago). I was told that I'd be gotten back to soon, but I haven't heard a word from her since. I also asked if I could instead do all the opinion pieces of the "Critic Corner," but didn't hear back for that, either.

MediaWiki stuff

Problem

Permabanned Anon

Hey Tucayo I just spotted a anon who was apparently permabanned (182.165.230.168) he'd been blocked since 2014. I thought that the maximum an anonymous user is blocked for is 6 months. The RPG Gamer (talk) (edits) 15:14, 17 June 2016 (EDT)

And I spotted a permabanned IP as well. This IP address (76.18.111.17) has been blocked since 2014 too. I also thought the maximum of an IP address block is one year. 24.185.100.225 (talk)

OK, they have been unblocked. But this is definitely a non-issue, so don't waste your time looking for permabanned IP's; if a legit user wants to edit from them, they email the admin team. --™ The 'Shroom 15:54, 17 June 2016 (EDT)
