Userspace categorizing

Hello. Please remove {{construction}} from your userpage. It currently adds your page to Category:Articles under construction which is kept for our actual articles. If you wish, you are permitted to use the template's source (excluding the category). Thanks.

'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 15:56, 31 October 2012 (EDT)

No problem. I had a doubt, then I checked if we could use it by watching all the pages that use this template in the category "Articles under construction", and because of I saw 3 users who use it, I thought we could. Sorry. Banon (talk) 16:01, 31 October 2012 (EDT)
Don't worry, it happens all the time. I'll ask an admin to remove the template from the remaining userspace pages. If you ever need any help, don't hesitate to ask me.

You're welcome :D I'll work on the other characters tomorrow. Also, this may be a bit embarrassing but what does canonical mean exactly?

Embarrassing still...what does canon mean?
I'll try to get my head around it :), but in the meantime;

RE: Transparency

  1. Try refreshing the page.
  2. Try GIMP
  3. You are welcome :D
That's likely because we are against adding transparency to artworks. We had a proposal last year. Now we can't give transparency to artworks unless the transparency isn't pixelated, or as we say "bad transparency". Acceptable transparency is ones where there is no visible white background around the edges against a black background (like this one). While an example of "bad transparency" can be seen here. Sprites, on the other hand, we recommend to give transparency because they are made up of larger, more definite pixels. But I'm not the expert, if you have further questions about image stuff try asking M&SG (talk) or Lindsay151 (talk).

RE: Question

The lack of treasures didn't look right, but I see many "Lists of Treasures" in the category, so those pages might hold more treasures beyond that. There might be some more pages which simply aren't categorized, so go ahead and tag the pages you feel are necessary.

About your second question, do you mean an internal link to a category? Like this? Simply add a semicolon to the front of the category name; [[:Category:Wario's Treasures]]. Without the semicolon, the page will be categorized and the link won't appear. I hope this helps :)

No problem! So, you're French? I went to France a couple of months ago. We went to a city called Briançon near the Italian border and mountains. There was this awesome old castle!
It's hot here in Australia at the moment! Once you get out of the cities, it's quite beautiful.
A bit on the unbearable side. But it rained a bit yesterday, so that was a nice change ;)
Am sorry, my classes start in a few minutes. I'll take my time you help you out later.
Okay now, the title Super Mario Bros. does in fact refer to "Mario and his brother". The "Mario Bros." part of the word is a collective term for the two brothers. Mario is often shown to be greater than Luigi, so his name takes precedence. Mario and Luigi don't have last names. This subject was discussed in an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto. I've found you the magazine scan here if you wanted to read up on it.

About my edit in Bowser and Kamek's article

Hey I saw that you posted about my editing in Bowser and Kamek's articles about Bowser knowing to attack Kamek. I said that Bowser attacked Kamek once which was when he was a baby and that was the only time he purposely attacked. You said that Bowser attacks him in New Super Mario Bros Wii, but if you look closely you would know that that was an accident and not intentional. Bowser became giant while Kamek was staring to see if the magic worked and thats when he bumped Kamek off the broom by accident. Bowser did not know Kamek was there when he became giant and that was Kamek's fault for staying there thinking the magic didn't work. It wasn't intentional. Smasher345

RE: Barge/Dash Attack

No problem. I was planning to create a separate article for the move, but you're right, it's pretty much the same move, just a different name. Maybe I'll just make it a redirect to Dash Attack, I'll think about it. Also "Sorry for having edited the page" makes sense. But "Sorry for editing the page" makes a bit more sense. Your English is very good, by the way. I know basic French and Italian (I was born in Italy). Vous parléz en Francais avec moi si vous desiréz ? My French is not that good!

Hey. Sorry for the late reply. I was a bit caught up with some other things lately. I have learned French for the past two years at high school, but I'm still not too good at it yel40.png. Je préferé parle Englais si vous plaît ! Merci mon amis!
To answer your question, I did take those screenshots with an emulator. But don't copy me, please! I've got a stack of screenshots I still want to upload. Also, I saw your edit on my page here. __NOTOC__ gets rid of the table of contents from the top of the page. I generally put this on some pages where there are a few short sections which will make a table of contents by default, but it is not necessary on the article. I put this on all of the Wario Land 4 levels as well. I see that you have that game! Do you play it much?

Mushroom Ball

Could you elaborate on how the redirect isn't useless?

Toa 95 (talk)

According to this proposal, article identifiers should match the game appearance as opposed to a quality of the subject, except in cases where it cannot be limited to a single game or they appear in the same game/media.

And to me, it just seems pointless to have the alternative identifier as a redirect. And considering the fact that other redirects like it have been deleted so far, it probably should.

Toa 95 (talk)

RE: Redirect

Hi. Uppercase and lowercase don't matter. See Help:Redirect. Also, yes you must move the page, because it retains the history. I'll do it for you if you want.

Sprite

Hi. Just to let you know that the sprite I reverted at File:MarioBrosSprites.PNG was the actual size of what the game displays, and that is always better than an upscaled one. Also my version was already transparent.

Hey, don't worry about it. Everyone makes mistakes. Just remember to refresh an image page often, as after re-uploading all it needs is a refresh to actually appear to change. I hope you are well.

Re: A little question

Hey Banon! Have the infobox first, and then use articleabout. The reason being is that when you put it the other way round, the infobox begins lower on the page rather than right at the top. I hope this helps.

The notice templates should go at the top of the page, but below {{italic title}} seen in the code.

Not a bother at all! So when we put an astrix within a category, like [[Category:Remakes|*]], it affects how the page appears on the cat. page. See how the page "Remake" article is put at the top with the asterix? This shows that it's some sort of core page. I hope this answered your questions. Please message me back if you need help with something else :)

Re: Capitalization

I've asked some of the other admins, and we do prefer lowercase for section titles (except for the first word and proper nouns. It's a pretty big change, but you are welcome to make a start by changing the "References to Other Games" and similar section titles on articles. In regards to the official policy pages, those will be taken care of.

Re: Proposal

Yeah, Writing Guidelines proposals are for when you're suggesting a whole new policy page (or a major revision to an existing Writing Guideline). I checked a couple pages at random and they didn't include the genre, just the name of the game, which makes more sense to me as well, and probably most other users too, I'd imagine. Anyway, yes, a Wiki Collaboration thread would be a perfect way to make sure everyone is on the same page and generate awareness about fixing the articles that do include the superfluous info. - Walkazo 21:20, 27 April 2013 (EDT)

New Super Chick Sisters

Thanks for moving that, I agree it should have been on there in the first place. You have a real interest in the controversies article! I have a bunch of other ideas for it on my sandbox page if you want to check them out. There is a whole lot more that could be added to it. BTW, I'm GBAToad, nice to meet you. GBAToad (talk) 13:40, 18 May 2013 (EDT)

Controversies

New section because it's so big :p

Thanks for the kind words! It took me a while to find sources that expanded upon the information that was originally on the wiki, and it was also difficult choosing a way to structure the article. Originally, I wanted to set it out by game/title as you suggested, but these sections allow for related controversies (such as lawsuits) to be clumped together and look organised (well at least I thought :p). The page as a whole is inconsistent with the other References articles given it's topic and size anyway, but if we were to organize the article alphabetically than I'd suggest keeping the lawsuits separate from the actual controversies. The titles I gave (Satanism, animal cruelty) were vague, but lawsuits are a different topic almost entirely which is why they should be separate if we re-arrange the article. Maybe we could just have two headings: Controversies and Lawsuits, and organize individual controversies alphabetically underneath those?

Anyway, here are my thoughts on your thoughts on my thoughts:

  • Birdo's Gender. — I completely skipped that article in my original search, thanks for highlighting it! It actually gives plenty of detail for constructing a list of continuity errors. I feel that Birdo's Gender doesn't necessarily cause an issue, more that its just weird and that plenty of gaming websites have made note of it.
  • Ashley — Yeah, for now the music is a placeholder and doesn't really belong there. A sped-up version (from the original software, otherwise it wouldn't work) would be cooler.
  • Universal accuracy — I actually structured it from a case report on OpenJurist.org, so it's all rewritten. I just thought I'd missed something is all :)
  • PETA images — One issue though, because of the article's topic we should avoid anything too gruesome, there are children that read this site.
  • Mario Party 8" " " means 'ditto', which essentially means I was too lazy to write it out again it's the same thing as the sentence written above it. So basically, it was easy to get information on the Mario Party 8 controversy, and I was wondering if we could upload an image for it. There is a perfect image for the controversy on the web, but I'm cautious to upload it in case it offends someone D:
  • Other lawsuits — Yes, the NSMBW hack scandal would be great! Also, unlike other console lawsuits (such as the Balance board lawsuit, the 3DS one gained a bit of momentum (not to mention Nintendo lost) and there is enough info to construct a good section about it, so it is definitely relevant. But, I didn't realize that the additional Mario Party one had more detail to it! You know a lot more about it than I do, so you should definitely add it to the article. It would be perfect to add, as well as the Japanese Wario/Luigi translation issue (D'OH I MISSED that controversy).
  • Other notes — Bulbapedia has a template on their article, but the best I could do was write the sentence This article contains information which may be objective to personal views. As such, reader discretion is advised. We probably do not need a new template for just one article.

As for including EVERY controversy, it's important to not go overboard. We should only list the controversies that Nintendo has acknowledged (because otherwise they really do not matter). As long as we can cite every sentence with sources and keep our credibility high (quoting Walkazo there) we can add it, provided that it has enough relevance.

Other than that, we should co-ordinate and divide up the new additions that we've come up with so that we can both contribute! Controversies make the Mario series (and Nintendo as a whole) really interesting, and I'm glad that other people think that. It's really great that you are interested in this stuff as much as I am. :D

BTW, Typing "List of Mario Controversies" into Google brings up this page as the first result, so my guess is that there hasn't been a similar list to this, ANYWHERE (which makes it kind of cool IMO). GBAToad (talk) 16:13, 18 May 2013 (EDT)

Censorship, eh? Can you give any examples (other than the Wario/Luigi Japanese issue)? They should definitely be added (well not ALL of them, just the major ones), because it is Nintendo that has to censor it. They could be added in a new section, right under Recalls. About all of the images and files, I'll try uploading some images soon. I'll also try to add something about the NSMBW lawsuit, but that could be a while. I'm really busy right now.
  • Agreed, Ashley's Song should have both files, it allows for contrast between the two.
  • Universal - Thanks! If there is anything necessary that is missing, then just add it.
  • PETA/MP8 - As stated before, I'll try to upload some stuff later, but if you want to upload some things before, than go ahead!
  • Lawsuits - I think the ones you mentioned are fine, but any other ideas are welcome.
  • Other Notes - Yes, objectiveness is important, but the warning should stay for precaution anyway.
You've helped quite a lot, which is awesome! Feel free to add anything else though, just remember the standard we've discussed and it should be fine. :D BTW, here is my newly created userbox (Megadardery helped me with creating it).
GBA B.pngGBA A.png
GBAToad (talk) 06:40, 19 May 2013 (EDT)
Your user box is cool too! :)
I looked through some of those pages and they were quite interesting. Those examples were good (BTW, what was wrong with Bowser? The article was a little unclear...) but I've got a concern: Are they controversial? An admin or someone with a more formulated opinion may be able to explain this better, but here is my opinion on writing these sections: If there was a major change made to a Mario related game because of offensive material, then the censorship would be classified as 'controversial' (I guess).
For example: In Japan, Doki Doki Panic had 'blackface' enemies, which needed to be changed for Super Mario Bros. 2 in order to avoid obvious racial implications (blackfaces are considered offensive in the US, but not so much in Japan). Due to the racy nature of the change (and the obvious offense it would have caused), it deserves a mention. Check out Bulbapedia's article for some Japanese to English examples, and that should give you an idea of the similar stuff that could be added.
So basically, to maintain the 'controversial' aspect of the article, only censorship's which would have caused a controversy (racial, ethical or other) should be added to the article. These additions would have to based entirely on assumptions unless Nintendo officially gave the reason for the change, which means we'll have to use good judgment and provide acceptable explanations. I might ask an admin to see if I'm right, so take this with a grain of salt. Some of these censorship's are really interesting (Vivian is actually male in the Japanese version of PM:TTYD. Weird, right?) but they should directly relate to a controversial topic so that they can be relevant to the article.
I'm guessing that's a way to look at it :)
As for Birdo, I'm all for adding something to the article about 'it' (Vivian too, perhaps), based on the fact that her situation can be considered a famous censorship issue. (Probably not the best way to consider it, but there should still be a mention in the article now that you've explained it.)
I agree that adding a bunch of other relevant censorship's will add a lot of info to the article, which is fantastic. It really is a great idea, we just need to outline the significant controversial censorship's that will fit into the article without them looking out of place. :D GBAToad (talk) 09:35, 21 May 2013 (EDT)
There is a similarity between Vivian and Birdo (and Naval Piranha) because of their gender situation (male in Japan, female everywhere else). It was just interesting to note the similar situation between them. However, Birdo's gender is constantly being retconned whereas Vivian's was just a localisation issue, so I guess the two aren't as similar as I thought :|
Anyway, absolutely to the Bowser pose censorship (thanks for that), so construct a section and add it when you can. Just added two new sections myself, one is titled 'Racism' (not 'censorships' ;)) for the Doki Doki Panic issue and the other is the NSMBW hack scandal.
Yeah, when I was writing the proposal I searched the wiki for controversies that could be mentioned, but thanks for creating that redirect :). Most of the articles in the results page use 'controversy' as a misnomer (Toad, Fire Flower, Tiny Kong). I'll add something about Octo to the 'Racism' section soon, and if properly worded I guess Milli Vanilli deserves a mention (IDK where). However, I've noticed that there are quite a lot of censorship's for European games, most to do with text. They could actually be put into a subsection titled 'Offensive dialogue' or something, which could also include these sections:
  • Mario Party 8 could be moved there, since there haven't been any other recalls.
  • Wario/Luigi Japanese voices
  • Boswer Pose (it's dialogue in the sense that its a hand gesture that means something)
  • Another one to do with Super Mario RPG, the word 'bugger' was removed from virtual console releases in Europe.
  • DK Rap (it doesn't really belong in Satanism)
GBAToad (talk) 01:58, 23 May 2013 (EDT)

I'll try and find some responses from the media to affirm the 'controversy' status of the lawsuit and add them to the section, as many websites found the lawsuit harsh coming from a company like Nintendo. The article was created to hold controversies (and lawsuits) in the first place, so a simple {{main}} template on the NSMBW page should suffice. GBAToad (talk) 08:44, 24 May 2013 (EDT)

nitpicking

okay; I just calculated wrong. --NewSMBU (talk) 11:28, 19 May 2013 (EDT)

Re: Unofficial e-World levels names

Hello, and no worries about moving the article names. I felt the redirects were unnecessary, because we always delete unofficial names after a page title has been moved to an official one. So I was just following procedure I guess. But if you really felt that they were necessary, I could restore them for you.

Thanks for helping out with the Spotlight project! Why don't you post something in the thread? We badly need some replies.

Rather than making a proposal, perhaps you should just ask for a second opinion from another admin.

The article definitely would benefit from having game box images in it rather than a worded list imo. Images should be fit in somewhere. Your idea does sound better though, since, while "remake" "ports" and whatnot are good terms to describe something, it's just that gigantic, homogeneous "Others" category is what does this in for me. I'm open to new ideas for implementation though, and btw, I'm better at criticism when what you plan to show me is visual rather than text, so I don't have more opinions than that. All right, good to know. Thank you for getting on it! Hello, I'm Time Turner.

Tagging Articles as Stubs

Hello! I've noticed you've tagged some articles as stubs. It's fantastic that you wish the articles be expanded upon, but there is a catch to the {{stub}} template – instead of placing it at the top of an article, as is usually customary, it should be placed at the bottom of an article, just above the regular sections and any navigational templates, if existent. The reason the stub template is still going to be visible is, despite it being placed at the bottom of the article, since the article is so small anyway, chances are the entire article will be visible without having the need to scroll at all. I apologise if this seems just a little bit pedantic, but consistency is key and I hope we both can agree to that.

Whilst I'm at it, this also applies to any sections you wish to place the template under. I hope this is understandable. PidgeyIcon.pngRandomYoshi(TalkPMsC) 16:49, 31 December 2015 (EST)

Mario is a human thing.

First, let me gladly welcome you back. Remember me? As for sic, I was about to add that "so people more well-versed in species nomenclature don't raise an eyebrow on why 'homo' is lowercase and try to uppercase it", but the edit summary wouldn't allow that. But I'm glad you agree on that aspect. On H. s. sapiens part, maybe I am being too technical about it, but I carefully worded it to clarify that the "modern human" part refers to us as in now and modern history, H. s. sapiens (the other known subspecies, Homo sapiens idaltu is extinct). I feel saying that "he's the not the same species as a human" doesn't have the same kind of preciseness since human is such a broad term when you're talking abut it as a species. But that may be too technical, the wording too careful, for our typical MarioWiki audience. I think it can work both ways as in "If this is true, then Mario is technically not the same species as a human (Homo sapiens).", but I find it difficult to remove "modern" from "modern human" since that's what H. s. sapiens pretty much are and H. s. sapiens is what we refer as H. sapiens in everyday speech.

P.S. On an opinionated note, I really think the guide should've thought this through better by making it Homo sapiens nintendonus so he's still technically the same species as us, but they've displayed their ignorance already by making "homo" lowercase, so we have to make of what we have. Yeah, I think it implies that. So, I reworded it a bit. Is it better? Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 18:56, 1 January 2016 (EST)
On edutainment games, you're right on that, and I was actually thinking about just separating them. I'm not sure what caused me to merge all genre games into one spot like that, but I'll gladly separate them. And I'll also gladly merge a trivia point (if not all of them) to the main body of the article, but I was going to proofread the newly added Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam section soon. It's a whole ton of work. And I'm not even close to done on this article. But thanks for the input! Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! Nah, don't sweat it; I've already done the changes today. Well, thanks for going out of the way to ask me, but you could've made the changes too if you want to, in this case. I've moved the trivia section to the main body under "general description" (something like that); I'd like to minimize trivia in general in this wiki where I can. Remake vs. Reissue

Why the change from "Remake" to "Reissue"? I'm pretty sure the latter is now being used wrongly - a "reissue" is something sent back out in the world with few or no changes - the Virtual Console versions of most games, for instance. Whereas the 1994 Game Boy version of Donkey Kong is (for the first four levels) a remake of the arcade Donkey Kong, not a reissue or port (hell, the NES version is a remake too, owing to the legal fighting over who owned the source code).

Basically:

  1. A game allowed to go out of print and then brought back out is a reissue.
  2. A game given new packaging (e.g., Player's Choice) is a reissue
  3. A game emulated directly from the original code (e.g., Virtual Console, the Wii disc version of Super Mario All-Stars) is a reissue.

A game recoded, redesigned or upgraded is not a reissue. It may or may not be a remake, but it's still a different thing. For instance, In no way, shape or form is Super Mario Bros. Special a "reissue" of Super Mario Bros. in any way that Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels isn't. It isn't even a remake, it's a different game that shares some features.

(There are also partial remakes embedded in other games too - the Throwback Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy 2, and the first star in particular, is a remake of Whomp's Fortress from Super Mario 64.) - Reboot (talk) 20:58, 1 January 2016 (EST)
