Hello there, this is winstein (notice the small letters).

Can Luigi win by doing absolutely nothing in every minigame?

A theoretical guide on if it's possible to win every Mario Party minigame without input on the player's part. Luigi is associated with winning minigames by "doing absolutely nothing", but we almost never see him lose by "doing absolutely nothing" either. The videos that showcased this tend to be very selective with this, so people assume that he can win everything by doing absolutely nothing, but that's not quite true. Many minigames require action and if nothing is done, they basically forfeit the match. I will be looking at every possible Mario Party minigame and determine how many minigames are possible with nothing done.

The possibility of winning assumes that:

  1. Only one character remains idle. Every other player will be a CPU player. Luigi might be interchangeably referred as the idle player, because he is the most well-known character to represent the idea.
  2. On survival-based team minigames (example: Flatiator, Lights Out), to count as doing nothing, every character must remain idle because the win is shared by every player even if one of them didn't survive.
  3. Every CPU is optionally at their easiest-possible difficulty in each game. Most games have "Easy", but some games might differ, like Super Mario Party's Normal difficulty.

Before counting as a win, the following are checked:

  1. If the minigame eventually ends in a draw, the win will not count.
  2. In a team minigame, if the characters is part of the team, the win will only count if every other team member can win by doing nothing. Otherwise, the win would be "Technically".
  3. For coin-based minigames, it is a considered a win if at least 1 coin can be obtained while other players are able to lose coins or retire the minigame without any coins.
  4. In minigames where an option is forcefully selected once a timer is depleted (such as Deck Hands and Card Smarts), the game will be labelled as "Technically". This is because the minigame, by design, makes it impossible to do nothing, but videos tend to include the minigame anyway, only because it only fits one part of the definition (no player input). An example of doing nothing is "Hide and go BOOM", where the player on the team automatically loses if they input nothing. It doesn't count because by all accounts, doing something is the same as doing nothing, meaning the action is not exclusive to doing nothing.

Super Mario Party

Minigame Description Can Luigi win by doing nothing? Notes
Trike Harder Tricycle-riding game with motion controls involved. No Requires motion input to win the game. Doing nothing is similar to forfeiting since CPUs will keep moving.
Slaparazzi Steal the spotlight when having a picture taken. No CPUs are able to move nearer to the camera Koopa Troopa, making it impossible for the idle player to earn enough points to win.
Sizzling Stakes Fry all six sides of a cube-shaped meat. No A button needs to be pressed to get the meat to fall on the pan. Even then, the pan needs to be moved to flip the cube.
Snack Attack Collect as many pop-corn erupting from a volcano. Yes It's possible for CPUs to lose popcorn, while at the same time, there is a possibility of multiple popcorn falling on the same spot.
Precision Gardening Pump enough water from a hose to water a faraway flower. No Requires motion input to win the game. Doing nothing is similar to forfeiting since CPUs will keep moving.
Gridiron Gauntlet Avoid Chargin' Chucks in a football field. Yes CPU players need to run into the Chargin' Chucks while as few as possible must appear on the idle player's lanes.
Candy Shakedown Shake different sizes of candy from a jar. No A button needs to be pressed to open the jar. Even then, the jar needs to be moved to remove the candy.
Fuzzy Flight School Navigate a submarine to avoid Fuzzies on the way. Yes CPU players need to run into the Fuzzy while as few as possible must appear in front of the idle player.
Croozin' for a Broozin' Avoid the Broozers that are charging from the left. No Wait too long and the Broozers will catch up. Since CPUs at least moved away from the stampede, the idle player will usually lose first.
Stake Your Claim Claim the area with the most squares to win. No Requires player input to select an option. Idle player thus cannot earn points.
Rumble Fishing Fish for the longest Dragoneels. No Wait too long and no Dragoneel is caught. As long as CPU catches one, the idle player automatically loses.
Sphere Mongers Obtain the most metallic spheres. No Requires player input to collect metallic spheres. Idle player thus cannot earn points.
Soak or Croak Shoot water at other players to push them out of bounds. No Two travelling bullets will cancel each other (need to check on this). As long as the idle player do nothing, at least one CPU remains. The CPU can possibly shoot the idle player out of bounds.
Senseless Census Count the toads in a train. No Requires player input to count up. CPUs never count to double the amount of passengers, thus the idle player cannot win.
Barreling Along Roll the barrel to the finish. No The player needs to tilt the controller to move the character.
Rattle and Hmmm Select the corresponding enemy that makes the same rumble. No Requires player input to select an option. Idle player thus cannot earn points.
Can Take Pancake Grab as many pancakes as possible. No Requires player input to collect pancakes. Idle player thus cannot earn points.

Social Climbers Climb a flagpole to the very top. No Requires player input to move. Doing nothing is similar to forfeiting since CPUs will keep moving.
Lost in the Shuffle Choose the Toad stack with the most matryoshka dolls inside. No Requires player input to select an option. Idle player thus cannot win as long as the CPU selects an option.
Follow the Money [COIN] Run along a course and collect as many coins as possible. Yes As long as the CPU keeps losing money while the idle player keeps at least some money, they will win.
Trip Navigator Run around a banana-filled course to the centre. No Requires player input to move. Doing nothing is similar to forfeiting since CPUs will keep moving.
Timing Is Money [COIN] Ground-pound a machine to collect coins or lose them all to a Bob-omb blast. No While it's possible for the CPU to lose money, the idle player cannot earn money without player input.
Air to a Fortune [COIN] Select a direction to collect coins. No Requires player input to move. No movement means the CPU have a higher chance of obtaining money.
Absent Minded Select the character that isn't found in the group of pictures. No Requires player input to select an option. Idle player thus cannot earn points.
Don't Wake Wiggler! Pat a Wiggler until the loser wakes it up. No Requires player input to earn points. As long as at least 2 CPUs earn points, idle player cannot win.
Metal Detectors [COIN] Dig money underground. No Requires player input to dig. Idle player thus cannot earn coins.
Lightning Round [COIN] Collect as many coins as possible while avoiding the Sumo Bros' lightning sparks. Yes It is possible to lose money from the sparks.
