Alfredo

Alfredo, also known as "Blue Mario" or "The Third Mario Brother", is the little-known brother of Mario and Luigi. Unlike most obscure Mario characters, he doesn't have an insane cult following, but he has been known to appear where least expected.

History

Donkey Kong series

Donkey Kong

Alfredo wasn't present in the arcade or NES version of Donkey Kong. As a matter of fact, he wasn't present in most versions. But he did appear in the Intellivision version of the game, presumably because Mario didn't want to appear on such a lame console. And he was also in the board game.

Donkey Kong Jr.

Pretty much the same deal as in Donkey Kong here, except now Alfredo's even bluer! He also shows up in the Colecovision version with a sweet cowboy hat.

Mario Bros.

Alfredo was all over the place in this one. In the Atari 5200 version, when you reach the second bonus game, Mario abruptly becomes Alfredo and Luigi's clothes get even greener. In the Amstrad CPC version, Alfredo takes Luigi's place. And finally, in the Game Boy Advance version, he appears as player 4. What a busy brother.

Super Mario series

Super Mario Bros.

If for some reason you're playing the PlayChoice-10 version of Super Mario Bros., then you'll see Alfredo on the second page of the instructions screen above the main screen.

Super Mario Bros. 2 USA Madness

If you're on the character selection screen, then one or both of the Mario Bros. will look like Alfredo when you have someone other than them hilighted. But not in the All-Stars version because then they're gray instead of blue and Alfredo's meant to be blue, not gray.

Super Mario World

Alfredo doesn't make a direct appearance in Super Mario World, but he is referenced. Once the player beats the Special World, the blue Koopa Troopas wear Alfredo masks.

Super Mario Sunshine

Another game where Alfredo doesn't directly appear, but this time he actually drives the plot. Bowser Junior tries to frame him (or maybe Metal Alfredo?), but when the Piantas see the blue Mario ruining their island they think "that's definitely Mario, arrest him at once." So when Junior realized how stupid these guys were he just went with it and said "sure, he's Shadow Mario now" and any connections to Alfredo were sadly dropped.

DIC Cartoons

I can't guarantee that Alfredo was in any of these shows, but it wouldn't surprise me if one of the animators screwed up and painted Mario entirely blue, thus making him resemble Alfredo. Also there was True Colors I guess.

Famicom Grand Prix series

In Famicom Grand Prix: F-1 Race, different Mario brothers show up if you win, depending on the color of the car you chose. So if you chose a blue car, you'll see Alfredo.

Mario Golf series

Alfredo appears as player 3 in Family Computer Golf: U.S. Course. He's also an alternate skin for Mario in the Nintendo 64 version, which even introduces Baby Alfredo as an alternate skin for Baby Mario and Metal Alfredo as an alternate skin for Metal Mario.

Mario Tennis series

In the Nintendo 64 version of Mario Tennis, Mario serves as the referee. But if Mario's already playing, then Alfredo is the referee instead.

Super Smash Bros. series

Alfredo appears throughout the series as an alternate costume for Luigi.

Mario Paint

  • Step 1: Draw Mario.
  • Step B: Paint him blue. Congratulations! You've unlocked the super-secret "Alfredo Mode"!

Action 52

In this abomination, Alfredo finally got his own game! It was called Alfredo on the main menu and Alfred n the Fettuc when selected, and he had to re-capture all the pasta that had escaped from his dishes.

Maybe it wasn't the same Alfredo. We'll never know.

Trivia

  • I did not make any of these appearances up.
  • Alfredo will return in: Every Mario game for Virtual Boy: Blue edition!
  • Sometimes he hangs out with Yellow Mario.

Yellow Mario

Not to be confused with Wario or Gold Mario. Maybe to be confused with Pietro. We'll see.

Yellow Mario is yellow. He's also so two-dimensional that Nintendo didn't even bother giving him a name, let alone an official relation to the Mario Bros..

History

Donkey Kong series

Donkey Kong

Yellow Mario first appeared in the Donkey Kong board game.

Donkey Kong Jr.

Yellow Mario takes Mario's place in the Atari 5200 version. But he's still wearing a bit of red so he's pretty easy to mistake for Mario.

Mario Bros.

Because Alfredo was busy, Yellow Mario was forced to star in the ZX Spectrum version of Mario Bros.. His presence was so sudden it turned everything else in the game yellow, so he took advantage of this by being both Mario and Luigi.

Oh, and he was also in the Game Boy Advance remake.

Super Mario series

Super Mario Bros. Special

Yellow Mario was in both versions of this game. Looking directly at him wasn't recommended in either version, because in the X1 version he was just too bright and in the PC88 version the dithering just looked real real bad.

Super Mario World

Yellow Mario doesn't make a direct appearance in Super Mario World, but he is referenced. Once the player beats the Special World, the yellow Koopa Troopas wear Yellow Mario masks.

DIC Cartoons

I can't guarantee that Yellow Mario was in any of these shows, but it wouldn't surprise me if one of the animators screwed up and painted Mario entirely yellow, thus making him resemble Yellow Mario.

Famicom Grand Prix series

Donkey Kong: Jungle Fever

Okay, I may have made this one up, but good luck proving that.
