Current projects

  • Improve our current coverage on Color Splash:
    • More CS stuff at User:Scrooge200/Sandbox2.
    • Split the PMCS card and PMSS sticker lists into actual articles. The list can stay, but they do deserve their own pages.
  • Make a list of Paper Mario: Sticker Star media.
  • Fill out the List of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga quotes page.
  • Re-rip Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island sprites. A lot of them are ancient, taken from TSR (which has bad color palettes for Yoshi's Island), or could use a better pose.

Game Opinions

Here are my genuine opinions on every Mario game I've played, organized by console. I give it a rating on a scale and explain why. This is not an insult towards anyone who may have other opinions on these games.

NES

Ah, the NES. It wasn't any good, it was just first.

Game Notes Rating
North American box art for Donkey Kong on the Nintendo Entertainment System

Donkey Kong

The game is enjoyable to play in short bursts. There's not much else to say about it. Good
North American box art for Donkey Kong Jr. on the Nintendo Entertainment System

Donkey Kong Jr.

While I do enjoy this game, it's a lot more difficult than its predecessor. I don't like it as much, but it's still fun. Good
North American box art for Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System

Mario Bros.

This game is fine. It's really hard, though. Decent
Dk jr math box.jpg

Donkey Kong Jr. Math

Have you ever wanted to play a video game solely about doing math? Neither have I, but clearly Nintendo thought somebody did. When I play Donkey Kong Jr., I want to be pushing keys and knocking down fruit, not doing math. Still, this game isn't that bad. It's good for a quick laugh. Decent
File:SMB Boxart.png

Super Mario Bros.

When you put it into perspective, it's a good game for its time, but now it's just decent. Not bad at all, but just kind of underwhelming. Decent
North American box art for Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Bros. 2

Maybe it's just me, but I consider this to be the best of the original NES trilogy. It's just so unique, and it's a lot of fun to play. Good
North American box art for Super Mario Bros. 3

Super Mario Bros. 3

I do not like this game. The level design is horrid and unfair. It makes me feel like I'm playing the Super Expert 100 Mario Challenge! There is no way to save, go back to previous worlds, or replay levels. However, I can give this game credit for introducing some fan-favorite characters, like Dry Bones, Thwomps, Boos, Chain Chomps, and the Koopalings. Bad
North American box art for Yoshi on the Nintendo Entertainment System

Yoshi

I don't really get this game. What am I supposed to be doing? Bad
NES box art of Yoshi's Cookie

Yoshi's Cookie

This game is mediocre. It's a little boring. While I don't mind it, it's not something I'd go out of my way to play. Decent

SNES

SNES graphics continue to amaze me to this day.

Game Notes Rating
North American box art for Super Mario World

Super Mario World

No, not the cartoon series. The SNES game. I really like this game. It improved on SMB3 in such a big way with the Cape Feather, Yoshi, hidden exits, an easy-to-traverse overworld, and challenging bonus levels. Great
Mario Paint

Mario Paint

At first, I thought "This game looks so stupid! Why would you ever want to play a MS Paint clone with Mario?" Then I played it, expecting to quit after a few minutes. What really surprised me was this: the game is actually good. It's great stress relief. Try it some time. Good
North American box art for Donkey Kong Country

Donkey Kong Country (Super Nintendo Entertainment System)

I very much prefer this game's sequels, due to them having more variety. This game isn't bad, though. The graphics are awesome, the soundtrack is super catchy, and I like how you can switch between DK and Diddy. Good
Title screen

Undake30 Same Game

This game is weird. It doesn't seem to have much value to it. There's just one singular puzzle mode, which is rather lackluster. I don't entirely hate it, though. It just kind of confuses me that it exists. Decent
North American box art of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

I don't play this game a lot, but I end up having fun when I do. I'd recommend it. Good
North American box art for Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (Super Nintendo Entertainment System)

This is one of the best games of all time. Diddy and Dixie are really fun characters to play as. The game never gets boring (well, except Bramble Scramble), and it stays very fun (well, except Bramble Scramble) and fast-paced (well, except Bramble Scramble) throughout. Every song in the soundtrack is amazing. The graphics are even better than the original DKC and every level stands out for being unique. Great

Game Boy

The console known for being shades of green. Even though it really isn't.

Game Notes Rating
North American box art for Super Mario Land

Super Mario Land

This game is short and easy, but I still enjoyed it for the hour it took me to beat it. Good
North American box art for Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

This game is really underrated! It's super creative and I love the soundtrack. The reason it doesn't get a "great" rating is because I found it too short. Good
North American box art for Mario's Picross

Mario's Picross

I didn't even know what Picross was until I played Mario's Picross. I got it so I could take a screenshot for the Game Over page, but then I played more of it. And you know what? It's actually fun. If you can excuse some of the bizarre puzzle descriptions, like "GRAND GOOMBAS," "tinkle," and "mud." Good
Donkey Kong Land 2 boxart

Donkey Kong Land 2

Compared to the original, this one is kind of "eh." The music is worse, the graphics are worse, it's pretty much a downgrade. Decent

DOS

Rare case of a Mario game on PC.

Mario's Game Gallery

Like Mario Paint, I thought this game would be stupid at first, but I actually ended up enjoying it. There's something wonderful about playing Go Fish with Mario. Please give me your Big Boos. Good

Nintendo 64

NES-style pixel art is overdone. How about some cruddy N64-like models again?

Game Notes Rating
North American box art of Super Mario 64.

Super Mario 64

A genuinely great game. Lots of fun to be had here. Great
North American box art for Paper Mario

Paper Mario

I prefer PM64 over TTYD. 64 has memorable locations, lots of partners, great bosses, an outstanding soundtrack, and is just an overall great game. I wasn't sure if I would like it at first, but I did. Great

Game Boy Color

Imagine if "having color" was a selling point in this decade.

Game Notes Rating
North American box art for Wario Land II on Game Boy Color

Wario Land II

While I haven't played this game recently, I do remember liking it. All the different paths were an appealing idea, and the transformations were fun to use. Good
North American box art for Wario Land 3

Wario Land 3

I don't like how you have to gradually earn your abilities. It feels strange to go from being super powerful in II to having nearly nothing in 3. I haven't completed this one yet. Good
US box art

Donkey Kong Country
(Game Boy Color)

This game is a faithful recreation for the console it's on. Still, the SNES and GBA versions beat it in every way. Good

Game Boy Advance

One of my personal preferred consoles.

Game Notes Rating
North American box art of Wario Land 4

Wario Land 4

Eh, I don't think I like this one as much as II and 3. Still not a bad game, though. Decent
Super Mario Advance 3 Box Art.jpg

Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3

I only got this game because the Wii U eShop didn't have the original SNES version. And boy, did I not like this. I never completed the first world. Everything in this game is just inferior, from the uglier palettes to the obnoxious sound effects. Bad
North American box art for WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!

WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!

It's the first WarioWare game, but it's one of the weaker ones. It suffers from quite a bit of trial-and-error gameplay. Sometimes, like in Mix & Match and Slick Wheelie, I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. However, there are only a few bad microgames in the over 200. The bonuses are pretty fun. Orbulon's stage is probably my favorite in this game. Good
The Game Boy Advance cover of Donkey Kong Country

Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Advance)

What do you get when you take the SNES version, downgrade the graphics and music, and add a bunch of quality-of-life improvements? Good
North American box art of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

I really like this game. It's a great start to the Mario & Luigi series. It's the most creative, there are lots of unique enemies, the bosses are fantastic, and the entire game is really fun. There are some flaws, like a few annoying characters (I'm looking at you, Starshade Bros.), too many tutorials, and the entire Oho Ocean Seabed segment, but it's still a great game. If you want to play a Mario & Luigi game, you can't go wrong with this one. Great
The Game Boy Advance cover art for Donkey Kong Country 2.

Donkey Kong Country 2 (Game Boy Advance)

I think this is better than the SNES version. It makes 100% completion a lot more manageable by including a checklist of what you do and don't have. Great
US box art for Donkey Kong Country 3

Donkey Kong Country 3 (Game Boy Advance)

This game is pretty great. I like Kiddy Kong and don't find him annoying, the Animal Buddies are fun to play as, there are lots of secrets, and the new overworld map is fun to explore. While I don't think it's as good as DKC2, it's pretty close. Great
Cover art for DK: King of Swing

DK: King of Swing

What even is this game? Why does it exist? The wonky controls were kind of fun at first, but then I realized, "Wait, I have to play the entire game like this!" I quit after the first world, and I don't plan to come back to it anytime soon. On the plus side, I do like the sprites and art style. Decent

GameCube

Never personally owned a GameCube, and man, is its game quality all over the place.

Game Notes Rating
North American box art for Super Smash Bros. Melee

Super Smash Bros. Melee

The genuine best Smash game. I started with Brawl and find it hard to return. I play without items, and I only do tournament-legal maps. It is now hard for me to play any Smash game except Melee. Yeah, it's not perfect and does have flaws, I'll acknowledge that, but I love it anyways. Great
North American box art for Super Mario Sunshine.

Super Mario Sunshine

Something about this game is just... bleh. I know it's divisive, and I'm leaning towards the "bad game" side. I don't find it very fun, the controls are weird, and Mario's moveset is too small. I haven't bothered to play much of this. Bad
North American box art for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

I'm not a big fan of this game, honestly. The character designs are the ugliest out of all Paper Mario games, the amount of RNG in battles gets frustrating, and I can't think of many chapters I actually liked. Most of the game is just backtracking or button mashing through dialogue. Bad

Nintendo DS

I kept losing my DS stylus.

Game Notes Rating
Sm64ds.jpg

Super Mario 64 DS

Not a big fan of this one. Obviously, there's the bad controls, but the constant character-switching didn't do much for me. The new content is questionable at best (why are half of the new stars obtained by catching rabbits, and what are the Silver Stars besides easier Red Coins?). Decent
The front box art for WarioWare: Touched!

WarioWare: Touched!

This game is good. Not my favorite WarioWare game, but it's still good. Some fun stylus-based activities here. Good
MarioLuigiPartnersTimeBox.jpg

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

The better Mario & Luigi game on the DS. Still not the best of the entire series, however. I'd rank it between Dream Team and Paper Jam. Still, I do really like this one. While I do prefer Bros. Points, the Bros. Items were a nice change of pace. The game's soundtrack is good, and the areas are creative. Difficulty didn't bother me too much. Great
Box art of New Super Mario Bros.

New Super Mario Bros.

This game is pretty mediocre. I played it once, got all the Star Coins, and can't really remember anything else about it. Decent
The North American cover of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

My opinion on this game switches every time I play it. Sometimes I like it and other times I don't. When I first played the game, I remember feeling really disappointed because it was weird and just not fun. I played more and I liked it, but when I replayed it, I found it tedious and boring. I think the cause of this is because there are really good parts of the game, like the Bowser segments at the start from Cavi Cape to Bowser's Castle, to the atrocity known as the Energy Hold. Bad
North American cover of the Nintendo DS video game, WarioWare: D.I.Y.

WarioWare: D.I.Y.

The game-making section of this game doesn't feel very developed. It's overly complicated and not much fun to use. I don't really care for the records or comics, either. The microgames are incredibly basic, even by WarioWare standards. Still, it's a good game. I like the Job Center missions, the actually entertaining tutorials, and Body Rock. Good

Wii

The era of motion controls is beginning, with more broken controls than you can desperately shake a Wiimote at, trying to get them to respond for long enough to let you win.

Game Notes Rating
Super Paper Mario North American cover art

Super Paper Mario

The gameplay is incredibly fun, there are lots of hidden secrets, there's a post-game, the bosses are great, and I love the soundtrack. SPM works for what it is, although there are better games out there. Great
Boxart for Super Mario Galaxy.

Super Mario Galaxy

I replayed this game to refresh my opinion on it, and I still didn't like it. I just rushed through so I could beat Bowser and then I stopped playing. The graphics are sub-par, the soundtrack is horrendously bland and boring, and some galaxies aren't very fun (I especially wasn't a fan of Gold Leaf, which is just a copy-paste of Honeyhive). Bad
Super Smash Bros. Brawl box art

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

I used to like this game before I realized how much better Melee was. This game is too slow-paced and floaty for my tastes. Even when I was a super big fan of Brawl, I still despised the Subspace Emissary. I found it incredibly boring and not fun at all. Bad
NSMBW NA Box Art.jpg

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

This was the first Wii game — and also the first Mario game — I've ever played. Did I have fun with it? Yeah, I guess. Good
WWDIYS WiiWare.jpg

WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase

Technically, this is WiiWare, but I think it's close enough to fit in my Wii section. So how is this successor to D.I.Y.? Well, for one, it removes the main thing about D.I.Y.; the actual D.I.Y. portion. But the word "showcase" in the title already implies that. This game is made up of two good stages and two mediocre stages. I personally think the pre-made comics in this one are better than the ones in D.I.Y., too. Eh, the game is fine enough, but if you want to try WarioWare, don't start with this game. Decent
Boxart for Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

I don't dislike this game as much as Galaxy 1. Don't get me wrong, it's still a bad game, but at least there are brief bits of enjoyment in it. Let me count: the Mario Squared Galaxy was creative, and I liked the Sea Slide Galaxy, and... yeah, that's really it. The bad galaxies greatly outnumber the good ones. Bad
MP9Boxart.jpg

Mario Party 9

This was the first Mario Party game I've ever played. I just assumed that every game took place in a singular vehicle. But you know what? I actually like it. I'm actually compelled to care about other players' turns to think about how it will impact me later. It feels like everybody's working together as a team, but they're also trying to sabotage each other at the same time, which makes for some interesting gameplay. Good

Nintendo 3DS

Best handheld console, period.

Game Notes Rating
The North American cover for Super Mario 3D Land

Super Mario 3D Land

A little bland, but still good. Is this better than 3D World? I'm not entirely sure. If you want Mario on the 3DS, this game isn't a bad choice. Good
Paper Mario: Sticker Star North America box art.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

I'm gonna say it: this is the best Paper Mario game in the series. Every time I play it, it just gets even better. It's amazing because it has no ten hour-long cutscenes of annoying characters, unlike TTYD. I spent every second of the game battling, exploring, or solving puzzles. The game looks visually great, the music is wonderful, the stickers feel unique and are all fun to use, and the fact that most Thing puzzles have multiple solutions helps them a lot. The battles are fast-paced and don't rely on cheap RNG-based mechanics. Yeah, there aren't many unique characters, but who plays Mario for the story? Playing Sticker Star for the first time, I had a moment where I realized that a video game was making me genuinely happy, and I'll never forget that. Great (but maybe that's an understatement)
North America box art of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

I don't get the hate for this game. People always say, "oh, there are too many tutorials!" Bowser's Inside Story has way more tutorials than Dream Team. The dream world is a much more interesting and actually fun version of Bowser's body. Overall, this game is pretty great. Great
Mario & Luigi - Paper Jam - NOA Boxart.png

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

I don't get the hate for this game, either. The lack of original characters didn't bother me very much, and all the paper additions were fun. The Papercraft Battles were about as much fun as eating a cactus, but at least they're over fast. I consider this weaker than Dream Team, but I still really like it. Great
North American cover for WarioWare Gold.

WarioWare Gold

The voice acting is a lot of fun to listen to, the minigames and records are great rewards, the microgames are still awesome, the challenge modes are creative, and it's overall an incredibly fun experience. It's so easy to pick up and play for a little bit. All the controls, even the microphone and the gyroscope, work perfectly and never feel unresponsive. If you want to play WarioWare, and even if you don't, please try out this one.

This game, along with Super Paper Mario, is the reason I joined this wiki in the first place. While reading the Underwhere Road and Overthere Stair articles, I noticed some typos and thought, "huh, somebody should fix those." Then, when I got WarioWare Gold, I noticed a navbox missing from Rhythm Tweezers. I added it, went back to the Super Paper Mario pages to fix the typos, and here I am today.

Great

Wii U

I was one of the few people to buy a Wii U. Nowadays it sits as my personal dust collector machine.

Nintendo Land

Uh, it's fine, I guess. It's a mix of good and bad minigames. The good outweighs the bad, but it's still not something you should spend 60 dollars on. Decent
North American box art of Super Mario 3D World

Super Mario 3D World

This game is good until World Mushroom. It kind of feels like they ran out of ideas at that point. None of the rehashed "remixed" levels, besides Piranha Creeper Creek After Dark, provide much of a challenge. And the fake replayability? I only got three out of five runs done before I got so burned out by the game that I stopped playing it for years! At least I had fun with the game my first time through. Good

NES Remix Pack

No real opinion on this game. At first, I thought it was actual NES games and levels, but turns out it's just tiny segments. I was disappointed at first, but then I learned to appreciate it for what it was. Decent

Name a more overrated console, I'll wait.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

World of Light is one of the most agonizing, boring, and repetitive experiences I've ever had in a video game. This game's sound design, to be honest, sucks. Every song in the game not for a specific franchise is an arrangement of the same obnoxious tune. There are at least 25 different versions of Lifelight in the game. Even the remixes are average at best, and none of them are that good with the exception of DK + DK Jr. Medley. Spirits are a lame and useless replacement for trophies, since you don't even get any insight on who these characters are. The actual Smash gameplay has some fun ideas, with Smashdown in particular, but it feels a little unbalanced. Bad
Super Mario Maker 2 boxart

Super Mario Maker 2

Super Mario Maker with a whole bunch of new content and less garbage levels? Count me in. The multiplayer is incredibly fun.
Here's my personal favorite out of the courses I've created, "Solar Stomp-Out." 6T2-4RW-4CG.
