A Topi
A Topi in Super Smash Bros, Melee.

Topis are short creatures that normally inhabit arctic climates. Topis are common enemies of the Ice Climbers (first debuting in the Ice Climbers' eponymous debut game Ice Climber). They also appear as an enemy in the stage Icicle Mountain in Adventure Mode.

In the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. Melee, Topis are blue seals rather than the round yetis with white fur coats seen in Western versions. The reason for this change is actually based on the enemy's original appearance in the NES version of Ice Climber; although Topis originated in the Japanese version of their first appearance as the seals Japanese gamers are familiar with, issues regarding animal cruelty eventually changed them to more "fictional" creatures for International versions of both Ice Climber and Super Smash Bros. Melee. However, the Vs. Ice Climber edition (and its Japan-only Disk System port) contains the overseas design.

Topis also appear as enemies that Popo has to pound with his hammer in the WarioWare: Twisted! microgame Ice Climber. Like in Super Smash Bros. Melee, their appearance differs between Japanese and International versions. They are also seen in 8-Bit Hero, a microgame in WarioWare: Touched!. When the player succeeds on the microgame's third level, a scene from Ice Climber appears. In this case, Topis are seals in all releases of the game.

Ice Climber

Topis debuted in the game Ice Climber, shuttling ice with which to repair cracks in the floors. They were kept really busy as Nana and Popo constantly cracked the floors with single strikes of their ice hammers. Despite the monotony of their chilly work, these creatures never slacked off for an instant.
