The Fun Fair[1] is the first level in Mario Pinball Land. It is set on a festival fair, with various attractions such as a haunted house and a roller coaster being present. The only enemies found here are Goombas and Boos. The boss of the stage is Big Boo.

Starting area

The starting area consists of a circular area surrounded by trees and a roller coaster. Four attractions can be found here: a Sky Cannon used to access other stages and protected by two Goombas, a high striker from which Mario is able to get Yellow Coins or Blue Coins by hitting it at high speeds, the Haunted House (which Mario cannot access unless he has at least one Star), and Toad's tent.

Toad's tent is accessible via the blue tent in the starting area. It is open only when Mario has at least one Blue Coin. Unlike in other shops, Mario can exchange Blue Coins for items or special minigames involving Bullet Bills, Bob-ombs, and Chain Chomps where he can earn Stars.

Boo room

Although inaccessible at the beginning, the Boo room is accessible via the starting area. Four Boos can be found in this area. Defeating them all yields the player a Star.

Big Boo room

The Big Boo room is accessible via the 10-★ door in the Boo room. The boss Big Boo is fought, and when he is defeated, he leaves behind a Star Key, and a ? Block appears on each side of the room. The left one contains an Invincibility Star, while the right one contains Lightning. After Mario brings the Star Key to the Fiery Stage, a Red Switch appears at the center of the room.

Minigames in Toad's tent

In each minigame, the player has 30 seconds to do the objective and is provided with two Yoshi Eggs (the only items the player can use in the minigame). If Mario falls down the drain, the minigame ends. If time runs out, the flippers become inoperable, forcing Mario to fall down the drain.

Chain Chomp minigame

The player must knock four Chain Chomps back to defeat them. The Chain Chomps constantly move forward, requiring the player to frequently hit them. The harder a Chain Chomp is hit, the farther back it goes. The Chain Chomps on the far left and far right stop moving forward when a little after halfway to reaching the bottom of the screen, while the other Chain Chomps stop moving forward when near the bottom of the screen. Defeating one grants 5,000 points, and defeating them all yields the player a Star.

Bullet Bill minigame

The player must hit 30 Bullet Bills that are blasted from both sides of the screen. Hitting one grants 500 points. As the minigame progresses, the Bullet Bills move faster. Hitting 30 of them yields the player a Star.

Bob-omb minigame

The player must defeat 10 Bob-ombs. In the center of the area is a Blue Switch, and hitting it while it is flashing makes one of the two cannons shoot a Bob-omb into the area each time. The Bob-ombs walk around, and the player needs to hit them to activate them so they can explode. The player can also hit a flashing Bob-omb to make it explode. Each Bob-omb that explodes grants 2,000 points. Also, a mushroom bumper is near each corner of the area, and hitting one grants 100 points. Defeating 10 Bob-ombs yields the player a Star.

Bonus game

After defeating Bowser in the Fiery Stage without getting a Game Over, the player gets a chance to play a bonus game in the starting area of the Fun Fair. The objective is to shoot Bob-ombs at the target. The number of Stars collected determines how many points each hit at the target is worth. Normally, each Star adds 10,000 points to the target score, but if all 35 Stars were collected, each hit at the target is worth 500,000 points. The player initially has 10 Bob-ombs, but each life the player has adds 10 more Bob-ombs to the count. Bob-ombs exit Toad's tent one by one, with up to three being onscreen at a time. The player must use the flippers to make the Bob-ombs enter the Sky Cannon before they explode or fall down the drain. When the Sky Cannon returns aboveground, any Bob-ombs in it can be shot at the target. The aiming cursor constantly moves onscreen, requiring the player to time it to hit the target. After the Bob-omb(s) in the Sky Cannon is/are shot, the process repeats. Each time the player tries to hit the target, the aiming cursor moves faster. The bonus game ends when the player has no more Bob-ombs to use.

The player plays the bonus game at night after defeating Bowser. If the player has not collected all the Stars and Egg Marks' golden eggs beforehand, the player can collect the rest of them during their second gameplay. Afterwards, the player can play the bonus game again, but this time, it happens during the day, and each hit at the target is worth 100,000 points.

Trivia

  • A Toad is occasionally seen riding the roller coaster in the Fun Fair's starting area. Also, after Mario enters the Boo room's 10-★ door, he rolls on the roller coaster rails before entering the Big Boo room.
