Monthly Mulligan

I'm glad to be back with my third Monthly Mulligan. This time, I'll be covering Mario Strikers Charged.

Review

I really liked the original; I'm not a big soccer fan myself, but the original kept my attention and was fun to play alone or with friends. As for the new addition, the first thing you see when you begin playing is that the graphics are much better. Everything's clearer, including the fans. However, I wish the fans would only celebrate and jump up and down after you score, like in the original; it wasn't in integral part of the game, but it was a great addition to the experience. I was also impressed my adding more captains and sidekicks. Obviously, not choosing just one type of sidekick for your team made it a whole lot more interesting. The variety of the different stadiums was nice, but sometimes, it made an enormous difference. On the Sluggers games, the ballpark you play in can make a significant difference, but it can't virtually rig the game. (Hint: Don't use players with a 10 on defense at The Wastelands.) As for the gameplay itself, I think it was very smooth. However, unlike its predecessor, it was much harder to pick up the game on your first try; newcomers didn't always enjoy it at first. This is partially due to all of the dekes, power-ups, skillshots, and Megastrikes; it was just way too much at once. They needed to make a meter for dekes, like the star power meter in the Sluggers games,, so that you couldn't basically become invincible. These annoying unbeatable strategies made online play a pain in the ass. Still, it's a really fun game. As for the plot line in "Road to the Striker Cup," it was pretty good, but they could have made it tougher and longer; minigames and mini-challenges would've been a nice addition. Although Strikers Charged has some drawbacks, it's one of the best spin-offs in Mario history.

  • Gameplay: 9.5/10
  • Graphics: 9/10
  • Storyline: 8/10

Overall: 8.83

Mulligan

Graphics

Although the graphics are nice, and an improvement on its predecessor, I think they could've made the fans jump up and down when you score.

Gameplay

Dekes

As I stated earlier, a deke meter that would fill based on your performance or just recharge over time would make it a little more fair.

Online Play

They need a mercy rule. People use all of these annoying strategies that make it a blowout, and you have no way to stop them.

That's all for this month, folks! Next month: Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart Wii

Non-Mario Review

By Leirin (talk)

I apologize for my absence last month; hopefully, I'll be able to make it up this month. For November I will be reviewing Pikmin, a GameCube classic released in 2001.

Miyamoto is easily one of the biggest names in gaming history; his creative ingenuity has lent us big-name franchises such as Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Legend of Zelda, etc. And it just so happens that Pikmin is next in line.

The game's approach is very different from that of Mario or Zelda: you are a captain named Olimar piloting the S.S. Dolphin who finds himself off-chart when a meteor hits his ship, causing him to land on an alien planet inhabited by tiny creatures called Pikmin. There are three kinds of Pikmin: Red Pikmin, which are immune to fire and can walk through flames unharmed; Blue Pikmin, the only Pikmin that can touch water; Yellow Pikmin, which can be thrown higher than the other Pikmin and are immune to electricity. With their unique abiliies and strengths, Olimar will have to put his Pikmin to good use to put his spaceship back together.

In Pikmin, it's a race against the clock, as you only have 30 days to search the planet for ship parts until your spacesuit gives out. Luckily, not every single part is vital to make it back home, though the player will get the best ending if he or she does.

The world is surrounded by terrifying beasts, creatures that will swallow your Pikmin one-by-one. The enemies serve as a testimony to the player's strategy; there are many ways to tackle the monsters. Some prefer using force (rushing all Pikmin in to defeat the beast) or by planning their attack. The variety of monsters adds to the replay value and make it an exciting game to explore.

While there is a bit of a learning curve to the process, commanding your Pikmin squad, which can consist of up to 100 Pikmin at a time, is never frustrating or confusing; the use of the C-stick as a guide works quite well.

The music of Pikmin is very impressive, returning to the classic orchestrations Miyamoto's games are known for. Some songs are peaceful, silly, or haunting; "The Final Challenge", for instance, is a seemingly lighthearted piece, but has a deeply creepy tone to it.

Despite being rather short, Pikmin is a game you’ll savour, and with that I conclude this review with a score of 8.9/10.

Recently, this game has been re-released on the Wii system under the New Play Control brand. I strongly recommend you give this unique game a try!

Interview

by Cmario17 (talk)

Hi, welcome to User Interview, now written by Cmario17! I just have to make sure the surprise guest is here…

Cm17: Are you here?

?? ??: Hi.

Cm17: OK.

?? ??: Ask me some questions.

Cm17: First question: When did you join the Mariowiki?

?? ??: Um…Around August 08.

Cm17: Ok, what year?

?? ??: Wait.

Cm17: What?

?? ??: Month is August…

Cm17: August…

?? ??: Year is 2008.

Cm17: OK! Next question: Are you ready? (um…Oh! I got it!) So if you joined the wiki in August 2008, it’s been a little more than a year, correct?

?? ??: Yes. Next question, please.

Cm17: Estimate how many edits you’ve made since then.

?? ??: Around 250, I guess…I’m more of a chat person. I just started to get into the wiki.

Cm17: OK. Question 3: Are you a sysop or patroller of the wiki?

?? ??: No.

Cm17: (Ok, I just had to clarify that) In that case, the new question number 3 is: What is your full Mariowiki name?

?? ??: Ace Reporter Kylie Koopa; I was going to go with just “Kylie Koopa”, but someone already had it.

Cm17: Interesting. Have you met this other person on the wiki?

ARKK: No.

Cm17: Ok, question 4: I’m guessing Kylie Koopa is your favorite character, right?

ARKK: Yes, although I do like characters such as King Boo.

Cm17: Any others?

ARKK: There’s Wario, and some others.

Cm17: OK, why are these characters your favs? (This counts as question 5)

ARKK: Well, I’ve always liked boos; they are very curious characters, and their design is good. Wario…is hard to explain, but I just like him. And Kylie Koopa…she was my favorite Partners in Time character.

Cm17: Are there any other games that she should have appeared in (in your opinion)?

ARKK: Bowser’s Inside Story.

Cm17: I haven't gotten to play that yet, but I've heard that it was a good game. What did you think?

ARKK: It was a very good game, despite my doubts pre-release. It was worthy of the Mario license.

Cm17: What games were not worthy?

ARKK: Hmm…I have played a small bit of NES Mario is Missing. That…was bad. Are there any more questions?

Cm17: (Um…let me see…) Yes. Question 6? (I’ve lost count). Anyway, next question: I can see on your userpage that you have posted ANTI-MALWARE MAN (Super Yoshi) as a friend. How did you meet Super Yoshi?

ARKK: I forget; I believe it was on chat.

Cm17: Why does the link say ANTI-MALWARE MAN?

ARKK: It was an inside joke.

Cm17: I must be on the outside, then. Can you fill me in?

ARKK: Well, there was another user who had a virus on his PC. Super Yoshi told him to get Malwarebytes, and that fixed the problem. So we started calling him anit-malware man.

Cm17: I see.

ARKK: I whole thing is a long story, so that was the short version.

Cm17: Ok. Moving on: Another question!

ARKK: Ok.

Cm17: Your page also states that you never got to play a SNES...are there any games you would have liked to try and why?

ARKK: Well, I have played SNES games on the virtual console, just not an actual SNES.

Cm17: Do they play the same games? (I never got to play either)

ARKK: Well, yes…sometimes they are edited for the virtual console releases, but they are mostly the same.

Cm17: So they don’t use the same game cartridge?

ARKK: You download games for the virtual console on Wii. The SNES uses cartridges.

Cm17: Ohhh! I see! (I feel stupid now - Embarrassed) Let’s continue:

ARKK: Yes!

Cm17: We’re going to play “Last Question?” – Is this the last question?

ARKK: …I guess? I’m not sure.

Cm17: It’s not, but this is the final question: Can we be friends?

ARKK: Yes.

Cm17: OK, I'll add you to my friends list - Thank you for the interview!

ARKK: Smiley You are welcome.

Fake TV/Movies

by Luigi 128 (talk)

Dr. Mario M.D. It's now in theaters, and it's about to become a hit TV series! It's a show starring Mario about him as a doctor in the Mushroom Medical Center in Plainsboro. Here, he and its equip, formed by a nice female Koopa, a black Goomba, and a Toad, solve medical problems here Mario acts like a jerk to everyone. Initially, Mario had a problem with his right hand, which he treated with Mushrooms, but he became addicted to The 'Shrooms. He also regularly encounters problems caused by the Koopalings.
The following is a dialogue from an upcoming episode:
Black Goomba: We have a Toad who can't feel his feet. In addition, his spots on his head are now purple!
Mario: Wow, you don't know what to do? Give him three pills that are the color his spots used to be, dumb****.
Toad: Wow, you're a genius.
Mario: No ****.

by Zero777 (talk) (with help from Baby Mario Bloops)

Welcome to the third and latest installment of..... USER BRAWL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today lucky Users will be:

Monteyaga vs. FunkyK38 vs. Cmario17 vs. Crackin355

Fighting in a limited 3-stock battle to the death with no items, except for the smash ball that only appears at medium level of times. The four brawlers will brawl it out on the frightful stage, known to many users as... Luigi's Mansion!

Luigi's Mansion

Let us get some information from each one of these fighters' bios...

Monteyaga: Monteyaga may be weak but he is EXTREMLY fast. Watch out for the moles he summons or you will have pain coming to you. You better watch out for his head butt or you will go flying! he is small but Intelligent... Watch out for his umbrella that he uses for a weapon (like a rapier!)! Overall he is small but fast!

FunkyK38: It's not Rosalina; it's the next best thing. FunkyK's got lightning fast moves and a strong partner to get her out of any jams she gets in.

Cmario17: Cmario17 is a Super Mario Wiki user. He’s usually very friendly, unless you have to fight him. He is a powerful fighter, and can call a Yoshi in aid him in battle, increasing his speed and power. Watch out for his Final Smash: he will create many Pill Pals, and everyone is bound to get hurt by several of them – just because there are SO MANY!

Crackin355: A Boy that fell through his computer and turned into a Knuckles look-alike. He is speedy, smart and doesn’t back down from a fight (Usually). He uses his Wiimote and DS during battle and his dogs are so loyal to help as well!

The Music:

The Brawl:

And here comes the brawlers, on the top-right of the stage a small hill is coming out of the ground and then pops out Monteyaga, on the bottom-right, a tornado of stars just appeared, there now gone and FunkyK38 appears, on the top-right of the stage, is that a Yoshi running into the battle field, well of course since Yoshi is carrying Cmario17, is Cmario17 feeding Yoshi a yoshi cookie, that's also right just to be kind to his pet, then Yoshi goes away, on the bottom-right of the stage, Crackin355 just jump off a trampoline and... OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! He just landed on his head, but he is OK.

3...... 2...... 1....... GO!! and there off, Cmario17 runs to where Crackin355 is at and they’re now at fist to fist, beating up each other good, but FunkyK38 runs in and use Star Swirl (standard) and they are both given a hefty amount of damage. FunkyK38 turns around and uses Star Bow (down) on Monteyaga who tried to sneak attack behind her, but he receive damage, but not enough so he is still going on a head on collision, when he just got close enough Crackinn355 uses DS Throwsion (side) and it's a black one, BBBOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, a large explosion just happened, so large it damages every player and sends Monteyaga really far and it caused the top right pillared to collapsed. As everybody recovers from the explosion a smash ball appears, Monteyaga comes in and uses Drill Drive (standard), but it's not enough and FunkyK38 uses Luma Toss (side) and it's a green luma, so Monteyaga is sent almost to the side boundary line but he recovers and uses Umbrella (up) to get back onto the stage. FunkyK38 uses Luma Toss again on the smash ball and it's a cream [colored] luma (strongest), but Cmario17 jumps in the way and is launched into a head on collision with Monteyaga which breaks his launch to the boundary line to a KO. As FunkyK38 was about to use another attack on the smash ball, the smash ball changed direction and Crackin355 uses Wiimote Throw (standard) which breaks the smash ball. Crackin355 now activates his final smash, Space Invaders, the space invaders are flying in and manage to grab FunkyK38 and Monteyaga but Cmario17 luckily dodged the space invader and got back on stage by using Coin Attack Jump (up), now Crackin355 jumps onto his space ship and is now shooting FunkyK38 and Monteyaga over and over and over again, the final smash is over and the both of them are launched into their first KO.

Crackin355 does a taunt but Cmario17 now uses Ride Yoshi (down) and uses Single-Yoshi Stampede (Yoshi's side) into a head on collision with Crackin355, and he is launched high, when he comes back down he uses Doggy Charge (down) but Cmario17 side-stepped and he uses Fireball (side) on Crackin355. Now they’re throwing punches at each other, but are stopped by Crackin355 who uses Wiimote Throw and it's the nunchuk, but Cmario17 uses Use Barry (standard) and it is reflected back to Crackin355 which costs him his first KO. As Cmario17 is doing a taunt Monteyaga all of a sudden jumps in and uses Headbutt on him, which launches him, then FunkyK38 uses Star Bow and it’s a direct hit, now FunkyK38 uses Teamwork (up) and Funky Kong threw him up and then she uses a powerful aerial attack which KOs Cmario17. As Monteyaga watches, Crackin355 sneaks up from behind and uses Doggy Charge on him, then Monteyaga uses Claw Furry (side), but Crackin355 uses Trampolino (up) to escape his attack, Claw Furry caused the top-left pillared to collapse. The smash ball appeared again, Crackin355 jumps after it but Monteyaga footstool jumps him and he uses Headbutt, but that doesn't break it, as he jumps after it again and about to attack it Crackin355 jumps for it but Cmario17 uses Tongue Attack (Yoshi's standard) on Crackin355 and spits him out on the other direction, as Cmario17 uses Egg Throw (Yoshi's up) on the smash ball, the Star Bow hits the smash ball before Egg Throw and breaks it, FunkyK38 now has the smash ball, FunkyK38 then runs up to Cmario17 and uses a smash attack which causes Cmario17 to fall off Yoshi then Monteyaga comes and uses Headbutt, then FunkyK38 uses Luma Toss and it's a cream luma launching Cmario17 to his second KO. FunkyK38 now uses Comet Tornado (final smash), a gigantic fire blue tornado just appeared violently jerking back and forth on the stage breaking the last two pillars on the mansion, the final smash lasted for a few seconds now it finally ended KO the other two brawlers.

As FunkyK38 taunts Cmario17 runs up while on Yoshi and uses Tongue Attack then spits her out and then uses Single-Yoshi Stampede launching her high into the air the Cmario17 Dismount (Yoshi's down) off yoshi and then uses Coin Attack Jump on FunkyK38 landing her to a KO. As Cmario17 descends down Crackin355 uses Trampolino and uses an aerial attack on him then Cmario17 starts abusing the Fireball attack and it's hitting Crackin355 and Monteyaga a lot of times. When Crackin355 hits the ground Monteyaga uses Drill Drive on him and then uses an aerial attack, then he sees a Star Bow racing towards him, he turns around but slips, as he sees it coming towards him the Mansion fixes itself causing the bow to slam into a pillar. Monteyaga then gets up and uses Claw Furry on FunkyK38 then FunkyK38 uses Luma Toss and it’s a black luma, it hits Monteyaga and launches him not too far. The smash ball now appears, Monteyaga uses Headbutt, but FunkyK38 hits the smash ball with Star Bow at full power, but it didn't break it yet, but when Monteyaga does Headbutt it breaks it. Monteyaga then frantically uses Monty Mole Summon (final smash) as everybody runs towards him, the monty moles are coming out of everywhere, there is a lot of them, pushing and damaging all opponents, but all of the opponents used their recovery move but Cmario17 hits the floor first and he is pushed of the edge, he quickly gets on Yoshi and jumps then uses Tongue Attack to grab the ledge, he stays there as Yoshi falls down, but he stays there too long and now the monty moles pull him down to the lower boundary line, Cmario17........ DEFEATED!

The final smash has now ended, When both of the brawlers recover from that barrage FunkyK38 runs up to Crackin355 and uses Star Swirl then she uses Luma Toss and its a red luma, launching Crackin355 high into the air, the she uses Teamwork and before she can land another attack Crackin355 uses Doggy Charge, launching her far. When she's about to get back on ground she uses a backwards aerial attack on Monteyaga then she follows him and does a downwards aerial attack launching him down but he uses Umbrella but before he can grab the ledge FunkyK38 used Teamwork and edge-hog the ledge causeing Monteyaga to slowly descend to his KO, Monteyaga...... DEFEATED!

Now it's down to FunkyK38 versus Crackin355, Crackin355 uses DS Throwsion and after uses Wiimote Throw, both are which a black DS and a nunchuk respectively, FunkyK38 uses Star Bow to intercept the black DS causing to blow up and destroying the nunchuk in the process, waiting for the debris to clear up FunkyK38 runs out of the smoke and uses Star Swirl but Crackin355 roles behind her but FunkyK38 changes direction causing him to be caught in it then he is launched upwards, as he is about to use her up attack to end the battle Crackin355 uses Trampolino hitting FunkyK38 launching her off the edge but she gets back on with Teamwork, as she goes after Crackin355 in mid-air she is interrupted by the Mansion which fixes itself again, and Crackin355 uses Wiimote Throw but it's just a Wiimote not doing too much damage when it hits FunkyK38, she then recovers and uses Luma Toss and it's the cream luma, as she watches the cream luma going into a head on collision Crackin355 quickly with correct timing roles behind it, but that is what FunkyK38 was hoping for as she uses a side smash attack on Crackin355, BBBAAAAMMMMMMMM, sending Crackin355 to his final KO, Crackin355..... DEFEATED! .... GAME!!

Petey Piranha vs. King Boo

Idea Submission:
Petey Piranha in Mario & Luigi: Partners in TimeGalacticPeteyPetey Piranha in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Welcome back, everyone, to my 7th character comparison! I will be using Galactic Petey's idea this time, a comparison between two enemy kings! Both are in a spin-off game, a 3D game and DS handheld games but what's so different about them? Let's see!

Physical Appearance

Petey Piranha

Petey looks almost like a Piranha Plant, except he has flower petals on his head, he has legs, he has arms, and he's giant!

King Boo

King Boo looks almost like a regular boo, except he has a crown.

Appearances

Petey Piranha

Petey appeared in many 3D and spin-off games. His first appearance was in Super Mario Sunshine for the GameCube. Bowser Jr. assigned him to guard Bianico Hills. Mariofought bravely and defeated Petey twice. His appeared again in New Super Mario Bros. as the fifth boss. After this, he appeared in almost every spin-off such as the Mario Golf series, the Mario Kart series and the Baseball series. After the spin-offs, he appeared in Super Princess Peach as a boss.

King Boo

King Boo first appeared in Luigi's Mansion for the GameCube as the villain. Apparantly, he wanted to capture both Mario and Luigi. He got Mario but he lost to Luigi in the end. He next appeared in Super Mario Sunshine as one of the bosses. He then appeared in Super Mario 64 DS for the DS as the boss of Big Boo's Haunt. Once again, he lost. He then appeared in some spin-offs, the Mario Kart series, the Baseball series, the Mario Party and the Mario and Sonic series. He also appeared as a boss in Super Princess Peach.

Powers

Petey Piranha

Petey has the ability to fly, headbutt, dig and make a Piranha Plant seed, make shockwaves, stomp and spit Nipper Plants.

King Boo

King Boo can teleport, blow Luigi into the foyer, materialize things out of thin air, fly and blow fire!

Personality

Petey Piranha

Petey is huge, but not very smart. He loves sleeping but will come running at Mario if he is waken up. His goal is to kill Mario and will stop at nothing to achieve it. He also loves food.

King Boo

King Boo is really intelligent and powerful. He is also very confident, such as at winning or at defeating Mario. He also likes taunting at this enemies.

Wrapup

Well this is the end of this comparison. So who is more popular, Petey Piranha or King Boo? Click "Show" to find out!

Artwork of Petey Piranha from Super Smash Bros. Brawl

PETEY PIRANHA- I have seen a lot of Petey lovers on this wiki and the world. Anyway, the reason why he won is because he's funny, strong and appears in more games then King Boo! Well that's the end of my November comparison. I'll see you in December!

Directors' Notes

Super Mario Bros.

Hey guys, I have to say it was fun directing the Music & Artwork (Art & Music) team for the past few months. However, I will no longer direct it since I am going to direct the Pipe Plaza, which is now being combined into The 'Shroom. If anybody would like to know, YellowYoshi127 will codirect with P. Trainer, who is now known as Paper Pikachu. Please send it to them in future issues on the forum, it is the only way to contact them. Anyway, I wish luck to all future members of the Music & Artwork staff, and especially to the two co-directors. Wink

Joseph had technical difficulties, so his section was late.

Character Artwork of the Month (YellowYoshi127)

Kritter's artwork from Mario Strikers Charged.

One word; EPIC

This is the best Strikers artwork ever most probably, you can really see the hard work in the drawing. Even though not many people know Kritter, they sure do now with this artwork. They look at this and think; Kritter=EPIC. I actually don't like Kritter, but I love this artwork.

Mario Kart: Double Dash - Mario & Yoshi

I've Edited the Pic to have Info on it.

I put: Baby Mario & Luigi trying to catch up, Yoshi & Mario - Mario Holding a Green Shell, Background: Daisy, Peach, Birdo, Bowser, Shy Guy, Banners

It's a colour full picture. It has lots of Characters in it.

Soundtrack of the Month (P. Trainer/Paper Pikachu)

First of all, I would like to apologize for the absence of my section last issue. There was a family tragedy, and I had to go offline for a while. I appreciate the support of those who know already.

However, back on topic, continuing the Paper Mario theme, I chose the theme for the epic battle against Doopliss [1], from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Not only is this music suiting to the battle, but I personally quite enjoy how the composers put in the bell, a reference to the curse that was put on it.

Review Corner

By Luigifreak (talk)

Okay, so this is Luigifreak, Again. I’m gonna have to make this review kind of short. So, I’ll review Wario Land: Shake It!! Here we go!

Story

It’s really nothing special. The Shake King captures the Queen Merlinda and the Merfles, along with a coin sack with unlimited coins. A Merfle escapes and tells Wario to save his people. This is a platformer, so it works.

Gameplay

This is a platformer. I’m assuming you all know what that is (If you don’t, I have descriptions of them in previous reviews.) In addition, you have one or two new moves. You have a dash (pretty basic) a ground pound, that basic stuff. You can also pick up stunned enemies and objects you find and aim them with the Wii remote to throw them at switches and other things. You can also shake the Wii remote while carrying objects to get new items. Finally, if you swing the Wii remote, you make an earthquake, which can manipulate objects. In the level, there are several gimmicks like cannons, rockets, and such. They are integrated pretty well, and work smoothly. Once you get through the level, you will rescue a Merfle. Then you must speed out of the level before the timer runs out. It’s not really hard, but it’s kind of interesting to do speed runs and such. So, that’s the gameplay in a nutshell.

Collectibles/Replay

First of all, you must collect coins in each level to buy new areas from the Pirate Shop. You also can collect treasures in each level. Finally you have missions in each level, which can range from collecting lots of coins to go a level without taking damage. On the replay side, there are a lot of hidden levels to unlock. Getting all the collectibles is kind of tedious..

Diversity of Levels/Enemies

The levels are pretty varied and interesting. Each has new obstacles and layout than the last. The levels themselves aren’t EXTREMELY hard (then again, I haven’t completely beaten this game) but they aren’t boring or anything. The enemies are pretty good. You basically have the same enemies in each level, but for some reason it isn’t boring. I guess it’s just the placement of them that makes them new and fresh. The bosses are very creative. You will actually HAVE to use your brain to beat them, and they are well planned and designed. No complaints.

Graphics/Audio

The audio is pretty well done. Some of it is really nice remixes. The rest is just new music, but it is also well done. The sound effects are nice. There are no bleeps or blips, its sounds crisp and smooth. The Graphics are also smooth and run well together. They are kind of cartoony, but that gives it some charm. Overall:

  • Story: 8/10
  • Gameplay: 9/10
  • Collectables:8/10
  • Diversity of Enemies/Levels: 9/10
  • Audio/Graphics: 8/10
  • OVERALL: 8.4

This is a pretty good game. It is kind of tedious in the collecting, and has a few rough edges, but overall it is worth at least a rent. Sorry if this review is late or seems rushed, but as I said I have a life. See you next time on… REVIEW CORNER!!! *Crowd Cheers*

Director's Notes

by Tucayo (talk)

Hello readers, I am your NOTHING WEIRD director Tucayo!! And welcome to the Director Notes, and let me tell you, these are probably the most important notes I have written, keep reading and find out why.
I have some very important things to tell you.
First, Nerdy Guy agreed to make a special section for this issue, I hope you like it.
Next, as you probably know, the Pipe Plaza proposal passed, this means, starting next issue, IF EVERYTHING GOES FINE, you will see the Pipe Plaza as a team, directed by our beloved teammate SMB! And now the most important thing, due to discussions going on between certain sysops and the core Shroom staff, we came upon some agreements that will change The ‘Shroom as we know it, first, we had Cobold’s idea which was the following. (Yoshario greatly supported this)

So we have The 'Shroom, apparently the official newspaper of the Mario Wiki aimed at our members, but still available on the navigation bar and posted on the front page, so it's definitely also targeted to the non-member public and can give outsiders an image of the MarioWiki.

And what kind of image? One of total garbage. I don't even know where to begin.

THE CURRENT STATE OF THINGS - Part of the 'Shroom is a collection of content that you'll most likely find on the Userpedia, and with good reason. Fake News isn't funny or original. It's a chaotic mess, not to mention it's fake. Comics that regularly appear aren't funny either except for those into the Userpedia scene. Fun Stuff contributes nothing of any value. Art & Music just has a random boxart, a random artwork and a random screenshot listed. None of these have anything to do with the wiki. The same is true for most other sections, too, like "Entertainment Section".

- Some of the articles are ridiculous excuses for writing. Check out the full section for "Upcoming Games" in the current 'Shroom: Quote ===Upcoming Games===== By DarkYoshi 1.New Super Mario Bros Wii 2.That's all for now I guess this was my first issue guys No formatting, no content, no anything. Obviously, the fact that this page still is up shows that there is no form of quality control with the current system, partly to blame is the fact that one director is busy with college, but still, this shouldn't exist.

- Still with all that, the Shroom manages to have pages about nothing. The so-called "Calendar of Events" does nothing more than list all upcoming games, upcoming FAs and upcoming user birthdays. The upcoming games list should be in the section "Upcoming Games", but that as seen above failed to do anything. The rest can either be read up on the wiki already for those interested, or has nothing to do with the Wiki like user birthdays. The Top 10 section is nothing more than a user opinion.

- Editors have little ideas how to properly spell, use grammar, format their articles correctly or actually fill them with content. The "Monthly Mulligan" review consists of nothing but a one-liner and a score. On its sign-up page, the Shroom requires its writers to have "perfect grammar, spelling and punctuation." Especially the Fake News writers don't seem to have any of that. Not to mention the rule for "All sections must be good in length and quality. " People create huge walls of text with no line breaks which are unreadable, not to mention the entire format and background of the Shroom look ugly.

WHAT WE SHOULD CHANGE We should get rid of anything that has nothing to do with our encyclopedia. That involves - Fan Fiction: Any sort of comic or fake news. Not only is it entirely pointless and off-topic, it also has no entertaining value, and considering that it's even advertised as being fake, it has no place in something that is considered our official newsletter. - Unfunded Opinions: There's nothing against stating your opinion with proper reasons, while pointing out that others may think different. What happens in the 'Shroom is that writers just list what they like, as if it was the truth. Not only does this have nothing to do with journalism of any sort, it's also basically an external user page telling the reader nothing other than about the writer himself.

Also we should - Strip down on the sections: We have to many, and they're hard to tell apart. "Monthly Mulligan" is just another "Review" page. - Make our page cleaner. People don't know what "From the Mushroom Vaults" means. We can do better than just listing the name of the column, and actually give each article its topic on the front page. Like the Wikipedia Signpost, Wikipedia's newspaper, does. - Fix the layout: It's not appealing to the eye. The background is hindering. The font and formatting of headlines is unpleasant. The arrangement of text paragraphs barely exists, pictures are scattered all over the place. - Set standards for spelling and grammar. - Set a length minimum. Some sections are way too short.

MY GOALS ARE: -To make the 'Shroom actually relevant. The 'Shroom has been of very poor quality for ages. But nobody cared, because nobody except the people who wrote it actually read it. -To make the 'Shroom actually live up to its status as an official newspaper and start covering the wiki, and the wiki only.

-To make it stop reflecting bad on us.

I will like to state 2 things, 1, that that section turned out to be spam, and 2, that I disagree 100% with this, but due to the insistence and that I was outnumbered, we will start with this stuff in December.

Next, we have Stoob’s ideas which are good, I agree with almost everything except the last sentence.

Let's face it. The 'Shroom has reached an all-time low in quality that I never even fathomed possible. The paper's quality is poor, our sections are far too short, our "funny" sections are anything but, and we've done NOTHING to stop this. (I include myself in the blame.) Here's what I propose we do:

- Cut down the limit to two sections per user. This will improve the quality of each section because our writers won't be so stretched thin. - Outright fire the users that have horrid grammar, create lousy sections, etc. - Divide The 'Shroom into two main sections: Wiki News and Entertainment. Wiki News would be a priority, and Entertainment would be trimmed down by quite a lot. - Set our standards much higher: -- Accept sections that only have proper grammar (a typo or two is acceptable, as these can easily be fixed). -- Make it so that a section must contain at least 700 characters of readable text. (Not coding or any of that; the actual text that you read). -- Make it so that sections must have a proper format. (Not exactly sure what the "format" would be, but it would outlaw random nonsense and the like, make it so that each section had to be aesthetically designed, etc.) - Create competent teams of people that will overview each section so that anything of low quality will be turned down; this team would also provide proofreading, so that sections are actually professional-looking. - Allow a person to miss a deadline once without getting fired. If they manage to turn their section in within the next week, the offense will be discounted. - Rearrange The 'Shroom main page, sign-up page, etc. (Again, not sure of the format we would use here, but it would be better than what we have up now.) - Provide certain 'medals' or 'icons' to those who send in good quality sections on-time. (Like, if X were to send in 3 good-quality sections in a row, he could have a little icon next to his name in the sign-up page.) - Get rid of the sign-up sub-pages (i.e Fake News/sign-up, Fun Stuff/sign-up, etc.) and compile them into one neatly-organized sign-up page. - Make it so that Wiki News sections are our TOP priority. In other words, if someone randomly joins and decides to create some Entertainment section, it would be turned down, unless it were an original idea and would intrigue readers' interest in The 'Shroom. - Any core staff members that do not uphold their part of the team will be fired. This should technically include the director too. (That's not directed at any of our current core staff members, but would be a necessary measure to implement.)

Well, Stoob has better ideas, which we will start enforcing NOW, well, most of them.
Well as Stoob said, we need an Editor, so starting today; there will be a thread in The Shroom child board where you can say if you are interested in the Editor in Chief job. In order to apply you need to have the most perfect grammar possible.link
A 3rd idea was given by Ralph, which we will start enforcing also now: Any user willing to sign up mist contact me (Tucayo) or Stoob so we have kind of an interview to decide if you are fit for the job, this means, people can’t sign up without authorization. THIS WORKS FOR ALL SECTIONS, INCLUDING SUB-SECTIONS.

I also have a message to all writers: IF YOU ARE CONSTANTLY LATE, YOUR SECTIONS ARE SHORT OR HAVE BAD QUALITY OR IF YOU HAVE BAD GRAMMAR YOU WILL BE FIRED, SO GET READY.

I know all these measures will cause many comments, so if you have any comment, complain, or if you simply hate this new system, please drop a line at the talk page. We also have some polls to see how you feel on the subject, and another about a new section proposed by P.Trainer.

Thanks for reading us! I hope you still do so next month, because we will have many surprises (weee). And as you know, there is also a Director Election next month!!! Now I leave you with Stoob, BYE! And remember, I utterly oppose the Wiki News thing. Because I think they are simply incompatible. See ya.

Sub-Director's Notes

by Stooben Rooben (talk)

'Ello, all. It's been a while since I've written anything in the Director's Notes, but I plan for that to change. Tucayo put just about everything I had to say quite nicely — and even put my thoughts on how to change The 'Shroom up there — so I don't really have too much more to say. What I will say, though, is that I plan to be a much better sub-director than I have been. I plan to start writing a new section within the next few months that could bring a more creative perspective to the paper, and I plan to help out a lot more. In closing, I'd like to thank all of the core 'Shroom staff for all their efforts this past week. Kudos to y'all. Peace out.
